Apollo 7 through 10 tested every piece before the landing.
After uncrewed tests including the shaky Apollo 6, NASA flew a crewed Apollo in Earth orbit (Apollo 7), sent a crew around the Moon (Apollo 8), tested the lunar module in Earth orbit (Apollo 9) and flew a full rehearsal to within about 15 kilometers of the surface (Apollo 10). [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
This step-by-step sequence is what you would expect from a real engineering program. It is also hard to fake: each flight was tracked by radio telescopes outside NASA’s control.
