U.S. operation against Iranian nuclear sites — Midnight Hammer context.

Iran: “obliterated”?

On 22 June 2025 seven B-2 bombers dropped fourteen 30,000-pound bunker-busters on Fordow and Natanz. Trump said Iran’s nuclear sites were “completely and totally obliterated.”

This guide spines the DoD Midnight Hammer transcript, CRS Report R48887 on the 2026 war, and the public fight over battle-damage assessments. Severe damage is documented. Permanent obliteration is a slogan. Full assessments stay classified — and that limit is part of the record.

Chapter 1

A Sunday briefing after a night raid

On the morning of 22 June 2025, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine walked reporters through a strike the country had just learned about. Overnight, they said, U.S. forces had hit Iran’s nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. [1]

Hegseth’s sentence was the one that stuck: Iran’s nuclear ambitions, he said, “have been obliterated.” [1] [2]

Chapter 2

Seven bombers, fourteen bunker-busters

Caine’s operational story was concrete. Seven B-2 Spirit bombers had flown east from the continental United States with a Pacific decoy package covering the deception. [1]

They dropped fourteen GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators — the first combat use of the 30,000-pound bunker-buster — on Fordow and Natanz. A submarine launched more than two dozen Tomahawks at Isfahan. About seventy-five precision munitions and more than 125 aircraft took part. [1] [3]

Chapter 3

Fordow, Natanz, Isfahan

The targets were not a mystery. Fordow and Natanz took the penetrators; Isfahan’s surface infrastructure took the cruise missiles, sequenced last to keep surprise. [1]

Caine said Iranian fighters did not fly and surface-to-air systems appear not to have seen the package. Initial battle-damage language was already maximal: “extremely severe damage and destruction” at all three sites. [1]

Chapter 4

“Obliterated,” said out loud

Obliteration was not a careful analyst’s word. It was the president’s public English, amplified by his defense secretary on camera. [2] [1]

In the same briefing, Caine refused to say what nuclear capability might remain. Final battle damage, he said, would take time. [1]

Chapter 5

Congress hears after egress

Asked about Capitol Hill, Hegseth said leaders were notified after the aircraft were safely out — and that the administration had met War Powers notification requirements. [1]

Whether notice-after is enough is a longer constitutional argument. That doctrine fight lives on the wars-and-strikes sibling; this page keeps the Iran receipt. [4]

Chapter 6

Leak week

Within forty-eight hours, labeled press described a preliminary Defense Intelligence Agency cut: the program set back months, not destroyed — centrifuges perhaps largely intact, some highly enriched uranium possibly moved. [5] [6] [7]

The White House called the leak “flat-out wrong.” Hegseth stressed low confidence and a leak investigation. [8] [9]

Chapter 7

Langley’s sentence

On 25 June, CIA Director John Ratcliffe issued a public statement: credible intelligence indicated the program had been “severely damaged,” with key facilities destroyed and years of rebuilding ahead. [10]

That became the administration’s preferred middle — harsher than “months,” softer than forever-obliterated. [11]

Chapter 8

A ceasefire that was not an ending

As Washington argued about hallways under mountains, the Israel–Iran twelve-day war slid toward a ceasefire. [12] [5]

Midnight Hammer sat inside that week. It did not close the Iran file.

Chapter 9

Buildup

CRS later recorded what came next: from late December 2025 through February 2026, President Trump directed a U.S. force buildup near Iran. [13]

The June slogan fight was about to be overtaken by a larger war.

Chapter 10

Epic Fury

On 28 February 2026, U.S. and Israeli strikes opened Operation Epic Fury / Roaring Lion. Trump said the goal was to eliminate imminent threats from the Iranian regime. [13] [14]

Israel’s opening wave, CRS writes, killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. [13]

Chapter 11

Minab

The same day, a U.S. Tomahawk reportedly hit a school in Minab, killing more than 150 people, most of them children. A preliminary military inquiry later found the United States responsible, citing outdated targeting information. [13] [15]

Senators and House members demanded the Pentagon’s answers. [16]

Chapter 12

Hormuz

Much of the war’s global shock ran through the Strait of Hormuz. Threats and attacks on shipping crushed traffic; oil prices spiked; a U.S. blockade became both weapon and bargaining chip. [13]

Chapter 13

A memorandum on paper

April brought a short ceasefire and talks in Islamabad. June brought a signed Memorandum of Understanding — Trump and President Masoud Pezeshkian, sanctions waivers, Hormuz language, a sixty-day clock toward a “Final Deal.” [13] [17]

OFAC issued General License X. [18] For a moment it looked like an off-ramp.

Chapter 14

Collapse

Shipping attacks resumed. The United States struck again on 26 June and harder on 7 July. Trump declared the MoU “over.” The sixty-day clock died in mid-August. [13]

August’s answer was “Economic D-Day” and Treasury’s Operation Economic Outcast. [19] [13]

Chapter 15

What the 2026 war did — and did not — do to the nukes

Here the obliteration boast meets a second test. CRS notes that early Epic Fury target categories did not feature Iran’s nuclear facilities. Vice President Vance later split the timeline: 2025 destroyed enrichment capacity; 2026 was about denying the money to rebuild. [13] [20]

Reuters, citing unnamed officials in May 2026, reported limited new nuclear damage and a weapon timeline still measured in months to about a year if Iran chose to build. [21]

U.S. Capitol — war powers and AUMF fights.

Chapter 16

The bill

By September, CRS could count. Eighteen U.S. service members killed. Eight hundred twenty-four wounded. The Congressional Budget Office: about $38 billion by 1 August. A Lead Inspector General report: munitions shortfalls and industrial bottlenecks. [13] [22] [23]

NGO tallies of Iranian dead ran into the thousands — labeled as such, not as DoD figures. [24]

Chapter 17

Classification as a character

Through all of it, the finished battle-damage assessment stayed inside classified channels. The IAEA, CRS notes, could not safeguard the struck facilities. [25] [13]

That is not a narrative inconvenience. It is why “obliterated” and “months” can both live loud in public while the referee stays offline.

Chapter 18

How to hold the contradiction

Damaged, delayed, disputed — then overtaken by a grinding 2026 war — is the compression this site already carried in the short nest. [26]

Soleimani, old AUMFs, and the wider wars ledger stay on Wars and strikes. Caribbean boat strikes stay on their own sibling. Ukraine is out of scope. [4] [27]

Chapter 19

Rival paths, same spine

One camp keeps obliteration as fair English. Another treats the DIA months cut as the last word. A third — closest to the public middle — takes Ratcliffe’s “severely damaged” and CRS’s later deny-rebuild frame. Regime-change readers and war-powers critics measure different steps on the same critical path.

Each has to say what evidence would have to be fake. That is the point of the theories section below.

Chapter 20

The status line that still works

Strikes and war: documented. “Obliterated” as permanent elimination: not supported by the public assessment fight. Full assessments: classified. [26] [1] [13]

That is the maintained record this deep guide expands — not a victory lap, and not a shrug.

Partly trueThe strikes obliterated Iran’s nuclear program.Obliteration claim

What the record shows. Sites were hit hard and initial BDA said extremely severe damage. Public assessments do not establish permanent elimination; leaked DIA months cut and CIA ‘severely damaged / years’ line both undercut literal obliteration.

  • Ratcliffe: key facilities destroyed / years to rebuild.
Points against
  • Caine deferred final BDA the same morning.
  • Leaked preliminary DIA: months-scale setback.
  • IAEA safeguards access blocked — independent verification missing.
  • 2026 reporting: limited new nuclear damage; deny-rebuild frame.

How this guide works

Sources and method

This page expands the Trump hub short case on Iran into a full guide. Primaries on the spine are the DoD Midnight Hammer transcript (22 Jun 2025), CRS Report R48887 (updated 18 Sep 2026), and the CIA Director’s 25 Jun 2025 public statement.

Battle-damage claims that rest on leaked preliminary assessments are labeled as press describing classified material — not as declassified IC products. Confidence levels and WH rebuttals are kept in view.

Soleimani, maximum-pressure era politics, AUMF doctrine, and Venezuela boat strikes live on sibling guides and are cross-linked, not rebuilt. Ukraine-war content is out of scope.

Never cite Grokipedia. Ratings are small badges; the story leads. ‘Unknown’ means classified or unsettled, not ‘false.’
