Operation Paperclip

The United States hired the men who built Hitler’s missiles.

After Germany’s defeat, the U.S. Army brought von Braun and more than a hundred of his engineers to America. Their V-2 missile had been built partly by concentration-camp prisoners at the Mittelwerk factory, where thousands died. Von Braun was a Nazi Party member and an SS officer. [1]

Their past was played down for decades. Critics who say Apollo was built on moral compromise have a point that historians now accept. [1]

From V-2 to Saturn V

The Moon rocket grew out of twenty years of missile work.

Von Braun’s Army team built the Redstone, which launched the first American astronauts, and then the Saturn family. The Saturn V stood 111 meters tall. Its first stage used five F-1 engines, developed by Rocketdyne and tested in California. [1][2][3]

Large rockets were not an invention of the Moon program. They were the product of a missile industry that both superpowers had built at enormous cost. Seen this way, the Saturn V was a step up in size, not an impossible leap.
