Retribution prosecutions

In one September night the President named three foes for prosecution. Within weeks two were indicted by a hand-picked interim U.S. attorney — and a judge threw both cases out because she was not lawfully appointed. A third critic, John Bolton, pleaded guilty to keeping national-defense secrets. Retribution is a slogan. The paper trail is not.

This guide is the second-term ‘retribution’ prosecutions spine. Hush-money, civil fraud, and Mar-a-Lago classified documents stay on their own full guides — we point, we do not rebuild.

The story

The retribution cases, told in order

Chapter 1

Path tease: sixteen links

Sixteen links carry the mainstream second-term “retribution” prosecutions story — from campaign pledges through a September night of Truth Social demands, an interim U.S. attorney later held unlawful, twin dismissals, a stalled Schiff probe, a Bondi-to-Blanche leadership reset, and John Bolton’s Espionage Act guilty plea.

Presidential pressure is documented in the President’s own posts. Appointment law is not a vibe. A critic can plead guilty to a records crime. Those three sentences refuse a single cartoon.

Hush-money, civil fraud, and Mar-a-Lago classified documents stay on their own full guides. We point. We do not rebuild.

Chapter 2

Retribution on the trail

Before the dockets, there was a brand. In 2024 Trump sold unfinished business: the people who had prosecuted and impeached him would face consequences. [1][2]

That rhetoric is not an indictment. It is the expectation set for a second-term Justice Department.

Chapter 3

Bondi, referrals, and a hesitant prosecutor

Pam Bondi takes Justice. [3] FHFA Director Bill Pulte sends mortgage-related criminal referrals naming Letitia James, Adam Schiff, and others. [4][5]

In Eastern Virginia, acting U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert is reported as reluctant to charge Comey and James. He resigns. [6][7]

Chapter 4

The night he named them

September 20, 2025. Trump posts to “Pam.” He names James Comey, Adam Schiff, and Letitia James. He says they are “guilty as hell” and that “JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!” [8][9][10]

Hours later he praises Bondi as doing a “GREAT job.” [11] The White House calls it accountability for alleged weaponization. [12]

The pressure is not inferred. It is posted.

Chapter 5

Halligan in; charges follow

September 22: Lindsey Halligan — a former Trump personal lawyer — becomes interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. [13]

Within weeks a grand jury charges Comey with false statements and obstructing Congress. [14][15] Another charges Letitia James with bank fraud and false statements on a Norfolk mortgage theory. [16] Both plead not guilty. [17]

Chapter 6

Maryland opens a different file

October 2025: a Maryland grand jury returns an 18-count Espionage Act indictment against John Bolton — diaries laced with TOP SECRET/SCI, personal email to family, home storage. [18][19]

The named senator who is not charged

Schiff was on the Truth Social list. [8] By late October, NBC and CNN report Maryland prosecutors have not assembled charges; the probe stalls. [5][20]

Naming is not an indictment.

Chapter 8

Currie answers the appointment

November 24, 2025. Judge Cameron Currie dismisses both the Comey and James indictments. Halligan, she holds, was unlawfully appointed under 28 U.S.C. §546 and the Appointments Clause. [14][21][22]

The orders are without prejudice. [21] That sentence will be ignored by everyone who wants a cleaner morality play.

Chapter 9

Appeal, and a process wound

DOJ notices appeal. The Fourth Circuit consolidates. The government’s February brief defends successive interim appointments and ratification. [23]

Separately, a DOJ review finds Ed Martin improperly shared Schiff-case grand-jury material. He loses the weaponization lead role. [24][25]

Sibling spines (pointers only)

Letitia James’s civil fraud case against Trump lives at civil fraud. Trump’s own Manhattan criminal case lives at hush-money. Mar-a-Lago classified documents live at classified documents. [33][34][35]

Chapter 14

Three outcomes, one slogan

Comey and James: dismissed on who held the pen — appeal pending. [14]

Schiff: named, uncharged in the public record. [5]

Bolton: pleaded guilty. [18]

“Retribution” is the slogan that tries to glue them together. The dockets refuse.

Chapter 19

Process wounds inside the Schiff file

Even without a Schiff indictment, the probe left a process scar: a DOJ review found Ed Martin shared grand-jury material he should not have. [24][25]

Retribution politics and grand-jury secrecy rules collided in the same hallway.

Grew from Trump’s own ‘retribution’ trail talk and the Sep 20 Truth Social naming.[4][1]

Why it lives

Lives because the public demand and prosecutor swap are vivid and documented.

If it were true

If fully true as to every defendant, Bolton’s guilty plea and diary facts must be explained away as coerced fiction.

How it squares with the record

Presidential naming is documented. [1]

Bolton admitted retaining national-defense information. [2]

Comey/James never reached a merits verdict. [5]

White House ‘accountability’ framing after Trump’s own indictments and impeachments.[1][4]

Why it lives

Lives among voters who experienced Trump’s prosecutions as partisan.

If it were true

If fully sufficient, public naming of defendants and an unlawful interim prosecutor become irrelevant footnotes.

How it squares with the record

Trump was prosecuted in multiple forums (sibling guides). [4][5]

Sep 20 posts still name targets for DOJ action. [2]

Currie found Halligan unlawful. [3]

Post-dismissal talking point minimizing §546/Appointments Clause.[1]

Why it lives

Lives because without-prejudice sounds reversible and defendants are political celebrities.

If it were true

If ‘mere gotcha,’ the Constitution’s officer-appointment rules become optional when the President is in a hurry.

How it squares with the record

CRS treats the vacancy statute as real law. [1]

How this guide works

Sources and method

Facts are drawn from EDVA dismissal orders, DOJ/USAO plea releases, Senate roll-call votes, CRS explainers, and contemporaneous AP/Reuters/NBC/CNN/Lawfare reporting. White House and defense statements are labeled as advocacy. Third-party AI encyclopedias (including Grokipedia) are never sources.

Hush-money, civil-fraud, and classified-documents spines live on their own full guides; this page cross-links lightly and does not absorb them.

Ukraine-war content is out of scope (the 2019 impeachment has its own guide).

‘Our Take’ style bottom lines are labeled assessments, not official findings. Dismissal without prejudice is not acquittal. A guilty plea is not proof that every other case is sound.
