The 2015 “astonishingly excellent” letter

Record · Official

Medical paperwork — stand-in for campaign physician letters.
Medical paperwork — stand-in for campaign physician letters. Whispyhistory · CC0

Four hyperbolic paragraphs, few labs, huge claim.

On Dec. 4, 2015, Dr. Harold Bornstein signed a letter saying Trump’s blood pressure and labs were “astonishingly excellent,” his stamina “extraordinary,” and that if elected he would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.” [1]

The campaign released it days later; reporters immediately noted the Trump-like superlatives and thin clinical detail. [2]

Bottom line Official

It is a real letter on letterhead — and a thin clinical document.

What the record can’t settle

It does not publish a full chart.

More numbers; still a private physician’s summary.

The Sept. 13, 2016 Bornstein letter lists cholesterol fractions, BP 116/70, weight 236, PSA, medications (rosuvastatin, low-dose aspirin), and concludes “excellent physical health.” [1]

It is more specific than 2015 — and still not a White House Medical Unit exam. [1]

Bottom line Official

Better detail than 2015; still a campaign-era private letter.

What the record can’t settle

No independent verification of the listed labs is public.

In May 2018 Bornstein told CNN that Trump “dictated that whole letter” and that Bornstein “just made it up as I went along” while writing. [1]

NPR and others reported the admission the same week. [2]

Before the second oath, age talk crowded out almost everything else.

By 2023–24 both major-party conversations treated candidate age and stamina as central fitness proxies. [1]

Miller Center biographical framing sits behind the political noise as ordinary presidential-history context. [2]

Jackson’s briefing and Barbabella’s memos are classic White House Medical Unit products: the president consents to release selected findings. [1][2]

Physician memoranda Guide asset · Public domain / CC materials

The refrain that confuses camps.

Jackson and Barbabella memos repeatedly pair “excellent” / “fully fit” language with diet, exercise, or weight counseling. [1][2][3]

Readers who hear only the adjective and readers who hear only the counseling are reading the same pages differently. [4]

Bottom line Official

Both clauses are in the primary text.

What the record can’t settle

Adjective inflation is a rhetoric problem; deleting counseling from memory is also a rhetoric problem.

How this page avoids the Veritas-style trap — on health.

Death-rumor fact-checks are useful reconstructions; they are labeled mainstream journalism, not substituted for Barbabella/Jackson memo spines. [1][2]

Method note: never Grokipedia; Ukraine war out of scope. [3][4]

Bottom line History

Editorial rule instantiated on this topic.

What the record can’t settle

Fact-checkers can still err — hence primary URLs on the path.

Disclosure density: first term vs second

Record · History

How public memory moved.
How public memory moved. Guide asset · Public domain / CC materials

Jackson era vs Barbabella cluster.

First term’s landmark public memo is Jackson Jan. 2018; COVID briefings were crisis disclosure. [1][2]

Second term quickly produced April, July, and May memos. [3][4][5]

Bottom line History

Pattern note for memory section — not a morality score.

What the record can’t settle

Denser paper can still omit raw archives.
