Donald Trump — guide hero (prior Trump Files asset, re-encoded).

The AI Files · The 2024 Butler and West Palm Beach attempts on Donald Trump’s life, Secret Service and congressional failure reviews, Iran-linked foiled plots in the public record, and major conspiracy claims measured against the critical path — through late October 2026 research · 2024–2026

Assassination attempts

A 20-year-old climbed an unguarded roof and nearly killed a former president on live television. Two months later another man waited with a rifle beside a golf-course fairway. The shots and the arrests were real. So were the Secret Service’s failures. What did not survive investigation were the claims that Butler was staged — or that Crooks had a proven accomplice.

Between those facts sits a documented chain: an exposed sight line at Butler, missed warnings, a dead firefighter, a foiled Florida ambush, Iran-linked murder-for-hire cases that are not the Crooks case, congressional and inspector-general reviews, six suspensions, a life sentence for Routh, and an FBI finding of a lone Butler shooter with no established motive. This guide follows that chain and scores the theories against it.

The story

The story of the attempts, from Butler to the reviews

From the unguarded AGR roof through Florida, the Iran-linked foiled plots, the FBI’s lone-actor finding, and the inspector general’s missed-opportunities report — keeping casualties, security failures, and conspiracy claims distinct.

Chapter 1

Path tease: sixteen links

The established account needs each of these links. Theories are scored against them at [[#path|the critical path]].

1. **Unguarded AGR sight line** — roofs outside the Butler perimeter can see the stage.

2. **Suspicious person flagged** — rangefinder, odd behavior; drone flight later noted.

3. **Comms do not pull the protectee** — Trump still walks on stage.

4. **Eight shots from the roof** — Crooks fires.

5. **Casualties** — ear wound; Comperatore killed; two spectators critically hurt.

6. **Counter-sniper kills Crooks** — no proven second shooter.

7. **FBI: bullet struck the ear** — not “just glass.”

8. **Cheatle resigns; probes open** — Congress and watchdogs move.

9. **Routh at the golf course** — rifle in the shrubbery.

10. **Agent spots the barrel** — Florida attempt foiled.

11. **Separate Iran-linked cases** — Merchant and Shakeri, not Crooks.

12. **Oversight: Butler preventable** — Task Force and Senate.

13. **FBI: Crooks alone, no motive** — November 2025 closeout.

14. **Suspensions and OIG** — limited discipline; missed-opportunities report.

15. **Routh life sentence** — jury, then Judge Cannon.

16. **Staging/inside-job fail the record** — through late October 2026.

Chapter 2

A real attempt, not a meme war

On 13 July 2024, at an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a 20-year-old named Thomas Matthew Crooks climbed onto a roof the security plan had left soft, fired toward the stage, and changed American politics in six seconds of noise. [1][2]

Donald Trump’s ear was struck. Corey Comperatore, a firefighter shielding his family, was killed. Two other spectators were critically wounded. A Secret Service counter-sniper killed Crooks. [3][4][5]

This guide is the deep file for that day, for the Florida attempt that followed, for the Iran-linked plots that are **not** the Crooks case, and for the reviews that called Butler preventable. It is not a gore page. It is not a Ukraine-war page. It is not Grokipedia.

Chapter 3

The roof that should not have been free

Before anyone fired, the geometry was wrong. The American Glass Research complex sat with line-of-sight to the stage. The House Task Force and the DHS inspector general later described an outside-perimeter sector that was not secured like the inner magnetometer world — a fence-line crowd, confused responsibility for roofs, local snipers who thought overwatch meant the venue, not the AGR tops. [6][7][8]

OIG added a colder detail: Crooks flew a drone to view the stage area, and Secret Service detection failed through operator and equipment problems. [9][10]

Chapter 4

Warnings without a stop

Locals flagged a suspicious man with a rangefinder. Radio traffic existed. What did not exist, on the oversight record, was a clean path from “we see him” to “the protectee does not take the stage.” [11][12][10]

Senate work also pressed resource denials in the Trump protective package and disputed Director Kimberly Cheatle’s claim that Butler asset requests were not refused. [12]

Chapter 5

Six seconds and a dead firefighter

Crooks fired about eight rounds. Trump was hit in the ear. Comperatore was killed. David Dutch and James Copenhaver were critically wounded. The counter-sniper ended Crooks’s life on the roof. [13][3][4]

Those sentences are why “staged” collapses. A political still of a raised fist can dominate memory; it cannot erase a named dead man. [1]

Chapter 6

Bullet, resignation, and the first theories

On 26 July the FBI stated that a bullet — whole or fragmented — struck Trump’s ear. [14][15] Cheatle resigned after a House hearing. [16]

Online, two bad ideas bloomed in opposite directions: that nobody was really hurt, and that the Secret Service had wanted the roof open. The first is false on the casualty record. The second still lacks proof of intent even where failure is obvious. [3][7]

Chapter 7

Florida: the control case

On 15 September 2024, Ryan Wesley Routh waited with a rifle in vegetation along Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. A Secret Service agent saw the weapon. Routh fled and was arrested. Trump was not hit. [17][18][19]

The Task Force later held Florida up as proof that protective measures, executed, can stop an ambush — the contrast that makes Butler’s failures sharper, not softer. [20][7]

Routh’s prior Ukraine-related public activity shows up in profiles. This guide notes it as biography and stops. The war is another subject. [21]

Chapter 8

Iran plots that are not Butler

In August 2024 prosecutors charged Asif Merchant in an Iran-linked murder-for-hire recruitment scheme; Trump was among discussed targets. He was convicted in March 2026. [22][23]

In November 2024, charges against Farhad Shakeri described an IRGC order to move against Trump before the election. Shakeri remained at large, believed in Iran. [24][25]

These dockets matter. They do **not** automatically explain Crooks. The FBI’s Butler closeout found no foreign direction of the rooftop shooter. Holding both facts is adult. Merging them is a slide. [26]

Chapter 9

Oversight writes “preventable”

The House Task Force’s final report said Butler should not have happened — not because of one cartoon villain moment, but because planning, execution, and leadership failures stacked. [7][27]

In July 2025, Senator Rand Paul’s committee product catalogued denied resources, communication breakdowns, and discipline that stopped at suspensions. [12] The Secret Service said six employees were suspended for 10 to 42 days and published a one-year reforms update. [28][29]

Chapter 10

The jury and the life sentence

Routh insisted on representing himself. In September 2025 a federal jury convicted him on all five counts, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate. [19][30]

On 4 February 2026 Judge Aileen Cannon imposed life imprisonment plus eighty-four months consecutive on the firearm-in-furtherance count. He appealed. [31][32][33]

Chapter 11

Alone — and still no why

In November 2025, FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino described an exhaustive probe: hundreds of employees, more than a thousand interviews, full access to Crooks’s devices and foreign email accounts. Their conclusion: Crooks acted alone. No manifesto. No foreign tie. No established motive. [26][34][35]

Patel said Trump, briefed as a victim, was satisfied. That is a political communication fact. It is not a substitute for the missing motive. [36]

Chapter 12

The inspector general’s cold list

On 30 June 2026, DHS OIG-26-13 itemized missed opportunities: the drone, the absent joint communications room, intel not shared to the people staffing Butler, the unsecure outside perimeter flagged in state plans, the unmitigated AGR line-of-sight. The Secret Service concurred with the recommendations. [10]

If you want the strongest non-conspiratorial failure case, start there — then read the Task Force beside it.

Chapter 13

What the theories have to break

**Staged** must erase Comperatore and the FBI bullet statement. It fails. [3][14]

**Inside job** must turn documented negligence into proven intent. It has not. [26][7]

**Second shooter** must overturn round accounting and the state-police identification of the water-tower figure. The bureau says no. [37][13]

**Iran ran Crooks** must invent a foreign handler the FBI says it did not find — while real Iran dockets sit next door. [26][23]

**Democrat plot** must produce controllers. Publicly, Patel’s testimony and the closeout point the other way. [38][39]

How to use the critical path

The sixteen links above are the spine. Every major theory in this file is scored against them: which steps it must deny or recast, what missing evidence it needs, what would have to be fake. [40]

If a viral clip cannot say which numbered step it breaks, it is entertainment, not a rival history.

Butler without Florida becomes a story of inevitable failure. Florida without Butler becomes a story of inevitable competence. Together they are a single 2024 protective season: one catastrophe, one interdiction, then years of reports. [20][7]

What remains open

Crooks’s motive. Whether any unreleased page ever shows intent behind a failure. Whether Shakeri faces a courtroom. What Routh’s appeal changes. How many quieter plots never make a headline. [35][24][33]

What we know now

What we know now

As of late October 2026 the FBI’s Butler probe is pending-inactive with a lone-actor, no-motive conclusion. Routh is serving life after conviction. USSS reforms and discipline are on the public record. Staging theories remain false against the casualty and ballistics record.

Where it started

Online expansion from Routh’s odd biography and pro se trial.[3]

Why it lives

Commentary around the life sentence.

If it were true

Florida becomes a multi-person plot the jury never saw.

How it squares with the record

Public prosecution convicted Routh as the rifleman; no co-defendant convicted with him. [1]

What holds up Unproven

Unproven; absence of co-defendants is not proof none exist, but evidence hasn’t been shown.

How this guide works

Sources and method

This guide is an *assassination-attempts file for 2024–2026 public events around Donald Trump. It is not* a Ukraine-war guide. Ryan Routh’s prior Ukraine-related activity appears only as brief biographical/motive reporting.

A *dead firefighter and two critically wounded men* falsify ‘staged shooting’ claims. Security failures are documented as planning, communication, and resource problems — not proven intentional collusion — unless a source establishes intent.

We cite FBI briefings, DOJ releases, court judgments, House Task Force and Senate oversight products, and DHS OIG. We never treat Grokipedia as a source. We avoid gore sensationalism.

Iran-linked Merchant and Shakeri cases are *separate* from Crooks and Routh. Do not collapse them into a single conspiracy without evidence.
