Georgia election case

The call is on tape. The racketeering case built on it never reached a jury. It ended after the prosecutor was disqualified and her replacement dropped every remaining charge.

Between those facts sits a Georgia-specific chain: hand audit, alternate electors, Coffee County, a special grand jury that found no widespread fraud, a RICO indictment, four guilty pleas, a romance scandal that removed the DA, a sitting-president immunity problem, and a 2026 fight over millions in legal fees. This guide follows that chain — not the Capitol breach, which has its own guide.

The story of the Georgia election case, from the beginning

From the certified Georgia result and the Raffensperger call through the Fulton RICO indictment, Willis’s removal, Skandalakis’s dismissal, and the fee aftermath — keeping the tape, the charging theory, and the non-acquittal dismissal distinct.

Chapter 2

A Georgia spine, not a Capitol rebuild

The January 6 attack has its own full guide — breach, federal case, clemency. [16] This page is the Fulton County racketeering story: audits, a phone call, Coffee County, a special grand jury, an indictment, a romance scandal, and a dismissal. Overlap is real. Duplicate storytelling is not.

Chapter 3

Paper ballots in November

After the machines counted, Georgia certified Joe Biden’s electors. [1] On 19 November 2020 the Secretary of State announced a first-of-its-kind statewide hand tally of presidential paper ballots had upheld that result. [2] Whatever else is argued about 2020, that announcement is why “find the votes” collided with a finished recount reality.

Chapter 4

December 14 at the State Capitol

Republican elector nominees meet, hear counsel invoke a Hawaii 1960 contingency idea, and cast Trump votes while litigation continues. [3] [17] Jack Smith later describes deception of many nominees about how certificates would be used. [18] Skandalakis, reading the Georgia transcript, finds no criminal intent in the electors he reviews. [3] The multi-state fake-electors nest holds the wider map. [19]

Chapter 5

One more than the margin

On 2 January 2021 Trump tells Brad Raffensperger he wants to “find 11,780 votes.” [4] [20] Meadows opens the call; lawyers argue; Raffensperger’s team rejects fraud claim after fraud claim. You can hear it yourself. Whether those minutes are solicitation or a frantic investigation ask is the argument that never reached a Fulton jury. [3]

Chapter 6

Coffee County

Days later, outsiders access election equipment in Coffee County. [5] Sidney Powell and Scott Hall eventually plead to related misdemeanors. [9] [21] Skandalakis later declines to keep pulling that thread against others, citing plea dynamics and thin proffers. [3]

Chapter 7

Willis builds a case

In February 2021 Fani Willis announces a criminal investigation. [6] A special purpose grand jury seats in 2022, hears dozens of witnesses, and — unanimously — finds no widespread fraud capable of overturning the election, while recommending charges. [7] [22] Recommendations are not indictments; nineteen people, not thirty-nine, are later charged. [23]

Chapter 8

Nineteen names

On 14 August 2023 a Fulton grand jury returns a RICO-centered indictment against Trump and eighteen others. [8] Judge Scott McAfee draws the case. Some counts will be quashed. [24] A trial verdict will never arrive.

Chapter 9

Four plead

Hall, Powell, Chesebro, and Ellis plead guilty in 2023 to reduced charges and promise cooperation. [21] [9] [25] [26] Those pleas remain part of the record after the lead case dies. They are not a verdict against Donald Trump.

Chapter 10

The conflict

Then the prosecution’s own integrity becomes the case. Willis’s romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade produces hearings, a McAfee order that Wade must go or the office must go, Wade’s resignation, and — on 19 December 2024 — a Court of Appeals opinion removing Willis and her entire office for a significant appearance of impropriety. [10] [12] The indictment is not dismissed on that day. The prosecutor is.

Chapter 11

Immunity’s shadow

In July 2024 the Supreme Court decides Trump v. United States. [11] Trump wins the 2024 election and returns to office. Timing and official-acts law become practical walls. Georgia’s Supreme Court denies Willis’s certiorari in September 2025. [13] Someone else must decide whether to try the case.

Chapter 12

Skandalakis ends it

Peter Skandalakis, unable to recruit another conflict prosecutor, takes the file himself — 101 boxes, an 8-terabyte drive — and on 26 November 2025 moves to nolle prosequi every remaining defendant. [3] [27] He doubts elector intent, calls the Raffensperger call concerning but ambiguous, declines Coffee County and Clark paths, prefers a federal forum that no longer exists, and refuses a five-to-ten-year chase of a sitting president. McAfee dismisses the case in its entirety the same day. [14]

Chapter 13

Not an acquittal

Dismissal is not a jury’s not-guilty. [14] It is prosecutorial discretion after a disqualification crisis. The tape still exists. The pleas still exist. The stolen-election claim still fails the hand audit and the special grand jury’s unanimous no-fraud finding. [2] [7] Verbs matter.

Chapter 14

Fees, not a retrial

Into 2026 the fight is money: roughly $16.85 million sought under a new statute tied to prosecutor disqualification, including about $6.26 million claimed by Trump. [28] [15] McAfee bars the disqualified DA’s office from intervening. Hearings continue. The criminal docket does not.

Chapter 15

Workers in the crossfire

Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss are falsely accused of fraud and endure threats; a civil jury later orders Rudy Giuliani to pay $148 million. [29] [30] Skandalakis says related criminal theories belong in Cobb County, not as Fulton RICO glue. [3] Their victimization is documented whether or not Count 1 would have stood.

Chapter 16

Clark’s letter that never left DOJ

Jeffrey Clark drafts a letter urging Georgia officials to act; Jeffrey Rosen and Richard Donoghue refuse; it is never sent. [31] Skandalakis treats the criminal-attempt theory as weak for that reason. [3] An unsent draft can still be historically ugly without being a finished Georgia crime.

Chapter 17

What “appearance” means

The Court of Appeals says appearance of impropriety is usually not enough — and then holds this is the rare case where only removing the office restores public confidence. [12] That is a process holding. It is not a factual finding that every overt act in the indictment was imaginary.

Chapter 18

Cross-links, deliberately thin

Need the Capitol chronology, mass clemency, or Jack Smith’s four federal counts? Use the January 6 guide and the federal short nest. [16] [32] Need the national stolen-election anthology or multi-state electors? Use those nests. [33] [19] This page stays on Georgia’s RICO arc on purpose.

Chapter 19

What this guide is for

Keep the Georgia RICO story straight without swallowing Capitol-day duplication, “perfect call” slogans, or “courts proved innocence” overclaims. Cross-link January 6, the federal nest, fake electors, and election-2020 when you need them. [16] [32] [19] [33] For this file, the critical path ends in a dismissal — and a reminder that history is not only what a jury says.

Fulton indictment Count 1 and related predicates. [1][1]

Why it lives

In the charging papers, SGJ recommendations, and four co-defendant pleas — not in a trial verdict.

If it were true

A jury would have found an unlawful Georgia-focused conspiracy beyond a reasonable doubt.

How it squares with the record

Indictment maps call, electors, Coffee County, and pressure into one enterprise. [1]

SGJ recommended charges after finding no outcome-changing fraud. [2]

What holds up Alleged

Holds as the prosecution theory; untested at trial after dismissal.

How this guide works

Sources and method

This guide starts from the Georgia Secretary of State hand-audit announcement, the publicly reported Raffensperger call, the Fulton special grand jury report, the August 2023 indictment, McAfee’s Willis/Wade order, the Georgia Court of Appeals disqualification opinion, Skandalakis’s November 2025 nolle memo, McAfee’s dismissal order, and 2026 fee-litigation reporting.

Grokipedia is used only as a checklist of topics to cover. It is never cited as authority.

Political even-handedness: the same evidentiary standard applies to claims that the call was an open-and-shut crime, that it was a perfect investigation request, that Willis’s removal proves Trump’s innocence, and that Georgia’s election was stolen. Charged, pleaded, dismissed, and merely alleged are kept distinct.

The January 6 Capitol attack, the federal election case, and multi-state fake-elector dockets have their own pages. This guide’s spine is the Georgia RICO / Fulton County case. Cross-links are light; those guides are not rebuilt.

This page does not cover the Russia–Ukraine war.

An earlier Trump hub treated Georgia as one short case file. This is the full guide that replaces that format for this topic. It nests under The Trump Files collection.
