The pieces, and where they stand

Each claim, in one line.

The towers came down because of explosives: false; NIST traced the collapses to impact damage and fire, see controlled demolition and thermite. [1] Building 7 was demolished: false; NIST found fire-driven failure, see WTC 7. [2] No plane hit the Pentagon: false, see the Pentagon. [3] NORAD was ordered to stand down: false, but its early accounts were wrong, see NORAD. [4] The government was warned: true, see the August 6 brief and the FBI warnings. [5]

What we can’t tell you. Each point is argued in full in its own file.

Why people believe it

Not because they are stupid.

Belief is not rare. In 2023, 20% of Americans told YouGov the government was behind 9/11, roughly as many as believed vaccines were used to microchip people. [1] Part of the reason is that officials did hide things: the CIA kept interrogation tapes from the Commission and later destroyed them, as its own chairmen wrote. [3] When secrecy is real, people fill gaps. The best public debate between the two sides, on Democracy Now! in 2006, is still worth watching. [2]

What we can’t tell you. Polls vary with question wording.
