THE CLAIM / THE FLAG

The waving flag

Why does a flag ripple where there is no wind?

RECORD / AT A GLANCE

FALSE

The flag hung from a horizontal rod that did not fully extend, leaving ripples. It moved only when the astronauts twisted the pole, then stopped. Tests in a NASA vacuum chamber reproduced this.
