The gifts

$850,000 and a policy of silence.

MIT’s review found 10 Epstein gifts totaling $850,000 from 2002 to 2017, nine of them after his conviction: $525,000 to the Media Lab and $225,000 to Seth Lloyd. Three senior administrators knew of his record and allowed the gifts provided they stayed small and anonymous. Epstein visited campus nine times between 2013 and 2017 without senior leadership knowing. Lloyd failed to tell MIT the source of two gifts and took a $60,000 personal gift. [1][2]

What we can’t tell you. The review found no MIT policy was broken because there was none.

Did Epstein steer other billionaires’ money?

Two accounts.

The New Yorker reported that Epstein helped secure at least $7.5 million for the lab, including $2 million from Bill Gates and $5.5 million from Leon Black, and that staff hid his involvement. Ito had disclosed $525,000 to the lab and $1.2 million to investment funds he personally controlled. [1][3]

MIT’s review found that Epstein claimed credit for a $2 million Gates gift and a $5 million Black gift, but “no evidence that the money donated by Gates or Black actually was Epstein’s money.” [2]

What we can’t tell you. Both can be partly true: Epstein may have encouraged gifts that were not his money.
