Joe Biden’s tall tales

Kinnock, the class rank, the Mandela “arrest”, the cannibal uncle and Beau in Iraq

RECORD / AT A GLANCE

Documented

The 1987 plagiarism and academic exaggerations were real and ended that campaign. The South Africa “arrest” did not happen, the cannibals story is not in the military record, and Beau died of cancer at home in the United States.

DOCUMENTED The family & personal claims

“Biden plagiarized a speech and dropped out of the 1988 race over it.”

He used Neil Kinnock’s lines without credit; with a law-school plagiarism finding and exaggerated academic claims, it ended the campaign.

Who says it: Contemporary reporting; Biden admitted it.

FALSE The family & personal claims

“Beau Biden died in Iraq.”

Beau served in Iraq in 2008–2009 and died of brain cancer at Walter Reed in 2015. Biden has suggested burn pits may have caused the cancer, which is unproven.

Who says it: Viral posts misreading Biden’s remarks.

FALSE The family & personal claims

“Biden’s uncle was eaten by cannibals in New Guinea.”

Numbered citations in each article identify the relevant sources. These records have different purposes and evidentiary weight.

  1. TIME — Why Biden’s first presidential campaign collapsed (2019 retrospective) ↗

Retrospective account, used alongside the academic-record fact check. It dates withdrawal to September 24; other chronologies date the announcement September 23. This guide uses September 1987 without implying the discrepancy changes the underlying events.

    His own walk-back.

  5. AP, April 2024: Biden says his uncle’s body was never found because of cannibals; military records tell a different story ↗

Ambrose Finnegan’s plane ditched off New Guinea on 14 May 1944. Blocks scripted fetches; confirmed by search.

  6. Snopes, April 2024: Biden’s uncle and the cannibals ↗

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency record.

  7. Snopes: Did Beau Biden die in Iraq? ↗
