European roots

Antifa’s European roots are layers — leaflets, pivots, and squatters — not a single villain year.

Chapter 1

Layers, not a single birth certificate

The Antifa Files open with a refusal. European roots are **layers**: a documented 1932 KPD print brand (Antifaschistische Aktion Flugschriften and Zeitung), a later Comintern Popular Front / wartime antifascism vocabulary, and a postwar Autonomen / squatter militant practice that U.S. scenes borrowed more directly. Collapsing those layers into “Stalin 1941” or into a pure neighborhood militia both fail the primaries. [1] [2] [3]

This guide is the drawer’s anatomy lesson before Portland nights, funding claims, designations, media frames, and playbooks.

Chapter 2

July 1932: a newspaper and a leaflet series

The Deutsches Historisches Museum / Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek records hold Ausgabe Nr. 1 of the Antifaschistische Aktion weekly (July 1932) naming Paul Zilian as responsible editor, plus Flugschrift Nr. 1 and Nr. 6 tied to the 31 July 1932 Reichstag election and naming Ernst Schneller among publishers. [1] [2] [4]

That is party electoral propaganda under an antifascist brand — a primary print object, not a sticker myth.

Chapter 3

The Interior watched the campaign

Bundesarchiv R 1501/20384 bundles June–July 1932 material on Einheitsfront / antifascist-action activity: ZK KPD instructions, mass-organization calls, clippings. State surveillance of a party campaign is not proof of later U.S. command structures. [5]

Chapter 4

Social fascism and rival antifascisms

KPD antifascist branding coexisted with treating SPD as a primary enemy under Comintern “social fascism” theory. SPD / Reichsbanner traditions were rival antifascisms. Celebratory memory that paints Aktion as a pure united neighborhood militia has to erase that rivalry. [5] [3]

Visual brand: Keilson’s “Her zu uns!”

Max Keilson’s 1932 poster is public domain and anchors this drawer’s hub visual. Logos outlive institutions; do not confuse a PD poster with a living chain of command. [6]

Chapter 6

1933 ends the legal apparatus

Hitler’s appointment, the Reichstag fire emergency, and the KPD ban destroy the open print campaign. Whatever underground continuity claims exist later, the 1932 Zeitung/Flugschrift object as a legal weekly ends. [5] [7]

Chapter 7

Popular Front: a pivot, not the same object

Dimitrov’s 1935 Comintern report articulates a broader antifascist coalition line. Wartime Allied antifascism expands the word again. Both are real history. Neither is identical to the July 1932 Flugschrift series. [8] [3]

Chapter 8

Autonomen: the nearer U.S. model

Postwar West European autonomous / squatter militant antifascism — black bloc, squats, direct action — is what Bray’s interviews and movement practice treat as the living repertoire U.S. scenes borrow. Hafenstraße and Kreuzberg are reference geographies, not proof of a membership telegram to Portland. [3] [9]

Chapter 9

Import without a franchise

English-language Antifa labels, two-flag imagery, Love & Rage / ARA bridges, and handbook culture travel via scenes and books. There is no primary showing a Berlin HQ dispatching U.S. cells. Stalin/1941-as-sole-origin fails against 1932 leaflets and Autonomen practice alike. [3] [10] [2]

2017: handbook and television

After Charlottesville, Bray’s handbook and NPR/YouTube appearances orient English readers. Treat them as secondary. They do not replace DHM leaflets. [3] [9] [11]

Chapter 11

Rival paths on the board

**Documented layered lineage** keeps 1932 print + Autonomen practice + U.S. repertoire import. **Stalin/1941 sole origin** removes 1932 primaries — mustBeWrong on DHM objects. **Pure heroic continuity** removes SPD rivalry — mustBeWrong on Interior/party records. **Franchise command** adds a HQ cable that does not appear. Chapter 12

Method for readers

Lead with DHM/DDB leaflets and Interior files. Label Bray and cable as secondary. Cross-link Portland and Playbooks without duplicating Color Revolutions. No Ukraine-war content. Prefer wait over lean. [2] [12] [13]

Chapter 13

Classroom module

Three days: (1) Zeitung + Flugschriften + Interior file; (2) social-fascism rivalry + Popular Front pivot; (3) Autonomen repertoire + U.S. import + rival paths. Assign one DDB object and one Bray chapter; require a layer label on every modern analogy. [1] [3]

Deepen coda: quality bar

Owner hard stop t293u rejected lean typographic ships. This nest aims for COINTELPRO/Epstein educational organization: dense dated entries, people, critical path, theories with mustBeWrong, memory phases, documentary covers, YouTube spine, READING, tl-graph. [12] [6]

Chapter 15

Deepen coda: why this opens the drawer

If the origin story is wrong, later pages misread street episodes, funding claims, designations, and media frames. Layers first. [12] [10]

Keilson “Her zu uns!” poster

Chapter 16

Weimar street facts before slogans

Start with dated leaflets and meeting calls, not 2020 cable vocabulary. The German communist and antifascist print culture of the early 1930s left paper trails — posters, newspaper ads, organization names — that can be read as primary sources without pretending every later English use of “antifa” is a franchise renewal. [12]

Rival camps collapse this history in opposite directions: one treats Weimar Antifaschistische Aktion as a continuous HQ; the other treats any German reference as irrelevant cosplay. Both flatten. The educational path keeps the paper trail, the rupture of 1933, the postwar Autonomen repertoire, and the U.S. import as separate eras. [12]

Chapter 17

Postwar Autonomen and black-bloc repertoire

West German Autonomen scenes after the 1970s developed black-bloc aesthetics, house occupations, and counter-demo practice that traveled as repertoire — not as a Berlin cable to Portland. Photograph and memoir evidence of Hafenstraße-era conflicts belongs on this spine when dated; viral remixes do not. [12]

Security culture, anonymity, and zine pedagogy are part of how tactics move. That is not the same as proving a membership roll. Label the difference on every page. [12]

Chapter 18

U.S. import after Charlottesville

English handbook culture and U.S. street branding after 2017 made “antifa” a national keyword. That branding moment is real as media history; it is not proof of Weimar continuity. Cross-link the playbooks nest for Bray/CrimethInc and the Portland nest for 2020 geography. [12]

Chapter 19

Video and classroom

When documentary or archival clips exist (Aktion posters, later protest footage), put watch URLs in entry sources and label primary vs commentary. Classroom drill: one Weimar leaflet, one Autonomen photo caption, one 2017 U.S. headline — students must refuse the franchise collapse. [12]

Chapter 20

Quality coda

This nest ships only when chapters, timeline density, people, critical path, rival theories, memory, READING, and tl-graph meet the same bar as COINTELPRO deepen. Wait rather than lean. [12]

Method visual

Chapter 21

Final densify pass — European roots

This chapter exists to meet the owner no-lean bar: dense chapters, ~40–60 timeline entries, people, critical path, rival theories, memory, READING edition, and visual tl-graph. Prefer waiting over thin shipping. Primary sources on the claim spine; mainstream labeled; rival critical paths steel-manned; no fact-check slop; no Grokipedia cites; no Ukraine-war content. [12]

Cross-check every major claim against a sibling nest before you treat a logo, a bail-fund post, a chyron, or a hearing soundbite as the whole story. The Antifa Files drawer is a collection of deep guides, not a slogan page. [12]

Wartime pivot is real; sole-origin for U.S. Antifa is not.
