In December 2022 a New York jury convicted Trump Corporation and Trump Payroll Corporation of a combined 17 felony counts. The January 2023 sentencing imposed $1.61 million in fines, the maximum available under the relevant law. [1]
The prosecution concerned a compensation-and-tax scheme involving benefits kept off the books. The companies denied wrongdoing and said they would appeal. Donald Trump was not personally charged in this prosecution. That distinction matters even though the companies bore his name and the conduct occurred within his business. [1][2]
The companies’ counts cannot simply be added to his separate hush-money counts to manufacture a personal conviction total. The corporate verdicts remain important evidence about business practices; they are not proof that every employee or owner was individually convicted. [1][2]
