The yardstick
Critical path
A critical path is the load-bearing chain any serious reading must handle — here: how live rounds on a New Mexico Western set, the armor/AD safety chain, FBI trigger testing, criminal pleas and convictions, and Baldwin's prejudice dismissal fit together. Visitors often arrive with a movie-plot or viral theory; these cards teach the official/record hinges and what any rival path must still account for. If a step falls, later conclusions that depend on it weaken.

Places production at Bonanza Creek Ranch under NM workplace and film-permit rules.[1]
In the narrativeChapter 3 — Bonanza Creek and a Western under pressure.
Why critical — if this fallsSets jurisdiction, workplace rules, and the physical set where the discharge happens. Without NM production, later OSHA/criminal frames lose their venue.
Any rival theory must account forRust filming at Bonanza Creek Ranch under New Mexico film/workplace rules.
2021-10-01Person-actGutierrez-Reed hired as armorer
Safety chain for blank/dummy ammunition lands on a young armorer.[1][2]
In the narrativeChapter 4 — The armor chain: Gutierrez-Reed hired as armorer.
Why critical — if this fallsPuts ammunition safety responsibility on a named armorer. Later manslaughter conviction depends on this role existing and being hers.
Any rival theory must account forHannah Gutierrez-Reed's hiring as armorer / safety chain for blanks and dummies.
2021-10-21Person-actHalls serves as first AD / safety coordinator
AD role includes calling cold gun — later central to plea.[3][4]
In the narrativeChapter 4 — Halls as first AD / safety coordinator; cold-gun practice.
Why critical — if this fallsAD 'cold gun' calls are central to how live rounds reach a rehearsal. Halls's later plea stamps criminal negligence on this role.
Any rival theory must account forDave Halls serving as 1st AD/safety coordinator including cold-gun announcements.
2021-10-22ObjectProp/ammo sourcing via PDQ / Seth Kenney orbit
Supply chain for dummies and blanks becomes investigative focus after live rounds appear.[5][6]
In the narrativeChapter 4 / 6 — Prop/ammo sourcing (PDQ / Seth Kenney orbit).
Why critical — if this fallsLive rounds require a supply path. Investigations focus here; sabotage vs negligence theories both must explain how live ammo entered the chain.
Any rival theory must account forProp/ammo sourcing via PDQ / Seth Kenney orbit as investigative focus after live rounds appear.
Industry-negligence spine hardens: live ammunition where only dummies/blanks belong.[5][6]
In the narrativeChapter 6 — Live rounds documented on set.
Why critical — if this fallsIndustry-negligence spine hardens here: live ammunition where only dummies/blanks belong. Remove live rounds and 'ordinary blank accident' returns; keep them and negligence (or worse) must be explained.
Any rival theory must account forDocumented presence of live rounds on the Rust set.
Early public confusion treated the shooting as a generic blank-gun mishap.Investigators documented live rounds — the hinge for criminal negligence theories.
Intact revolver would not fire without trigger pull in FBI tests; damage tests separate.[6][9][10]
In the narrativeChapter 7 — FBI Firearms/Toolmarks testing and the trigger fight.
Why critical — if this fallsFBI tests that an intact revolver would not fire without trigger pull undercut 'gun just went off' as a mechanical free pass. Damage-test disputes remain, but the intact-gun finding is load-bearing for actor/armorer duty fights.
Any rival theory must account forFBI testing: intact revolver would not fire without trigger pull; separate damaged-gun tests.
Some viral claims treated the revolver as spontaneously firing with no trigger actuation.FBI intact-gun testing supports need for trigger pull; zero-actuation as stated is false on that spine.
Medical investigator framing coexists with later criminal negligence theories.[11]
In the narrativeChapter 6/9 — OMI manner: accident (medical investigator framing).
Why critical — if this fallsManner 'accident' coexists with later criminal negligence — not a pardon. Rival paths must not equate OMI manner with legal innocence.
Any rival theory must account forOMI manner of death recorded as accident alongside later criminal cases.
Petty misdemeanor negligent use; probation — first criminal disposition.[3][15][16]
In the narrativeChapter 9 — Halls no-contest plea (Mar 31 2023).
Why critical — if this fallsFirst criminal disposition on set safety. Anchors that a responsible AD accepted negligent-use liability — hard for 'nobody did anything wrong' narratives.
Any rival theory must account forHalls no-contest plea to petty misdemeanor negligent use; probation.
In the narrativeChapter 10 — Gutierrez-Reed involuntary manslaughter conviction (Mar 2024).
Why critical — if this fallsJury finding that the armorer was criminally negligent. Core Documented negligence spine. Sabotage theories must still explain this verdict or overturn it on appeal.
Any rival theory must account forHGR involuntary manslaughter conviction by jury (Mar 2024).
2024-04-15RulingBaldwin case dismissed with prejudice (Jul 12 2024)
Judge finds state withheld material ammo evidence.[22][23][24]
In the narrativeChapter 11 — Baldwin case dismissed with prejudice (Jul 12 2024).
Why critical — if this fallsCourt-documented discovery violation (ammo evidence withheld) ends Baldwin's criminal case with prejudice. Political-motive claims are a separate spine (t306u split).
Any rival theory must account forJudge's dismissal with prejudice for state's withholding of material ammo evidence.
Some commentary treated dismissal as proof the shooting narrative itself was a political hoax.Dismissal documents discovery misconduct; it does not erase live rounds, HGR conviction, or Halls plea.
In the narrativeChapter 12 — Sabotage theories circulate without charging.
Why critical — if this fallsKeeps intentional-planting claims at claim-layer unless indicted. Prevents swapping an uncharged theory for the Documented live-round negligence spine.
Any rival theory must account forAbsence of sabotage indictment; intentional-planting remains claim-layer.
Online sabotage narratives treating intentional planting as established fact.Live rounds on set are documented; intentional planting lacks charging — keep the object and the motive claim on separate spines.
2025-05-23Claim hinget306u split: withhold vs political motive
Court-documented discovery violation ≠ proven political prosecution.[22][34]
In the narrativeChapter 12 — t306u/t307u split: discovery withhold vs political motive.
Why critical — if this fallsStops CNN-hedge and conspiracy overclaim alike: court-documented withhold is Documented; political prosecution motive is separate and not proven by the dismissal alone.
Any rival theory must account forDocumented discovery violation on its own spine; political-motive claim kept separate / unproven by dismissal alone.
Some commentary treated ‘case thrown out’ as proof of a political hit job end-to-end.Withholding material ammo evidence is a court-documented failure; political motive for the prosecution remains a separate claim-layer question.

Lead with Santa Fe Sheriff process, FBI Firearms/Toolmarks reporting, New Mexico court dockets and hearing video, then dated wire reporting. Indictment ≠ guilt. Rate each conspiracy claim on its own spine (t306u/t307u).
This guide is a story-first educational file about the Oct 21, 2021 Rust shooting and everything that followed in criminal court, civil court, and public conspiracy talk. Primaries first: sheriff warrants and briefings as reported, FBI ballistic testing as reported by outlets that saw the lab conclusions, New Mexico First Judicial District orders, plea minutes, jury verdicts, and the Dec 23 2024 notice withdrawing the state’s Baldwin appeal. YouTube clips of hearings and verdict coverage are wired as video primaries where they exist — labeled as hearing video or news pool, not as secret evidence.
Epistemology labels matter. Documented means a court order, plea, verdict, or agency forensic conclusion on the cited spine. Claim-layer means someone’s theory. Contested means serious camps disagree on the same primary. False as stated means the popular wording fails the cited record even if a softer nearby claim survives.
t306u/t307u rule applied throughout: do not soft-pedal a well-supported claim by answering a harder different claim. “Live rounds were mixed onto a set that should have had none” is not answered by “prove intentional sabotage.” “FBI testing found the intact gun required a trigger pull” is not answered by “prove Baldwin wanted to kill anyone.” “Judge dismissed for withheld ammo evidence” is not answered by “prove the whole case was a Democratic hit.”
Bottom line Documented
Lead with Santa Fe Sheriff process, FBI Firearms/Toolmarks reporting, New Mexico court dockets and hearing video, then dated wire reporting. Indictment ≠ guilt. Rate each conspiracy claim on its own spine (t306u/t307u).

Twenty hinges from production setup through HGR parole — rivals must say which they remove.
The critical path on this file is not a vibe. It is a chain: Rust films in New Mexico; Gutierrez-Reed is armorer; Halls is first AD/safety coordinator; ammo sourcing runs through a prop-supply orbit including PDQ/Seth Kenney; on Oct 21 2021 during a camera rehearsal Baldwin holds a revolver that discharges, killing Hutchins and wounding Souza; Santa Fe Sheriff investigates; live rounds are documented on set; FBI testing addresses trigger function; OMI calls manner accident; Hutchins estate settles civilly on sealed terms; Halls pleads no contest; a judge approves the civil settlement; a jury convicts Gutierrez-Reed of involuntary manslaughter and she receives 18 months; Baldwin’s case is dismissed with prejudice for withheld ammunition evidence; the state withdraws its appeal in December 2024; Gutierrez-Reed is later paroled while her appeal remains pending; industry safety rules tighten in the aftermath.
Every rival theory on this site must map to that chain: what it accepts, what it reinterprets, what it removes, and what new node it needs. Fog is not an argument.

Low-budget Western filming on a historic New Mexico ranch under time and money pressure.
Rust was shooting at Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe — a working Western location with a long film history. The production’s public story after Oct 21 became inseparable from cost pressure, hurried schedules, and safety-staffing disputes that crew members described to investigators and reporters. Those workplace complaints are not themselves the shooting, but they are why the negligence path found a ready audience in Hollywood labor politics.
This file does not treat “indie Western” as a moral insult. It treats the production as a workplace where firearms props are industrial hazards. New Mexico film incentives and ranch logistics explain geography; they do not decide mens rea.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was the on-set armorer responsible for firearms and ammunition safety checks.
In film work the armorer controls guns and ammo on set: inventory, dummy checks, blank loads, and the ritual that a weapon is safe before it enters an actor’s hand. Gutierrez-Reed was young for the responsibility she held on Rust. That fact is biography and hiring context — the criminal case later asked whether her conduct met New Mexico’s involuntary-manslaughter negligence standard, not whether youth is a crime.
After the shooting, investigators and trial evidence focused on whether live rounds were present, whether checks were performed, and whether the armorer’s systems failed. A March 2024 jury answered with a guilty verdict on involuntary manslaughter. Sentence: 18 months. She was released on parole in May 2025 with conditions including stay-away provisions regarding the Hutchins family; her appeal to the New Mexico Court of Appeals remained pending as of this guide’s research date.

First assistant director and safety coordinator — the person who famously called the gun “cold.”
Dave Halls held the first AD job and a safety-coordinator hat. On many sets the AD’s “cold gun” call is the last verbal safety gate before a weapon is handled in a scene or rehearsal. Witness accounts and charging documents made that call central: if a gun is announced cold, cast and crew treat it as incapable of firing a projectile.
On March 31, 2023, Halls pleaded no contest to a petty misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer imposed six months of unsupervised probation, a fine, community service, and a firearms-safety course, with cooperation terms. That plea is the first completed criminal disposition on the Rust spine.

Prop-supply chain became the investigative focus for how live rounds appeared among dummies.
Western productions often rent period firearms and buy or borrow dummy cartridges and blanks from specialty prop houses. Seth Kenney and PDQ Props appear repeatedly in Rust investigative reporting and defense filings as the supply orbit for ammunition-related materials. That makes them a critical-path node for the negligence story: somehow a live round was on a set that should have contained only inert dummies and blanks.
This guide does not convert supply adjacency into a sabotage conviction. No public record on this file shows a completed criminal conviction against Kenney for intentionally planting a murder round. The documented fact is messier and still damning for set safety: live ammunition was present in a workplace that had no business hosting it. Rate sabotage separately from negligence.
Bottom line Partly documented

During a camera setup/rehearsal inside a church set, the revolver in Baldwin’s hand discharges; Hutchins is killed; Souza is wounded.
On the afternoon of October 21, 2021, the Rust company was working a camera rehearsal on the Bonanza Creek Ranch church set. Baldwin, playing the lead, held a single-action-style prop revolver. The gun discharged. The projectile struck cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and then director Joel Souza. Hutchins was flown for care and died; Souza survived with a shoulder wound.
Immediate public statements framed the event as a tragic accident. That framing is compatible with later criminal negligence findings: accident as medical manner is not the same as “nobody broke a duty of care.” Santa Fe County opened a homicide investigation. YouTube-era news pools preserved the first-day shock; those clips are wired here as contemporaneous coverage, not as forensic primaries.

The safety verbal — “cold gun” — collided with a weapon that fired a live round.
Multiple accounts describe Halls or the safety chain presenting the revolver as cold before it reached Baldwin. In set dialect, cold means no blanks and no live ammo — safe to dry fire or handle for camera. The existence of that call is why the negligence path is not a metaphysical mystery: either the check failed, the call was wrong, or both.
Baldwin has said he did not pull the trigger and did not know the gun was loaded with a live round. Those are two different claims. Knowledge of a live round is a mens rea question the criminal case never finally tried to a Baldwin verdict. Trigger actuation is a mechanical question the FBI lab addressed. Keep them separate.

A working cinematographer died doing the job of looking through the camera.
Hutchins was not a bystander. She was framing the shot — the person closest to the lens axis when a firearm pointed in the camera’s direction becomes a weapon again. Her professional biography (Ukrainian training, U.S. feature work) matters as human context, not as geopolitics. This guide refuses Ukraine-war content; her nationality is identity, not a foreign-policy subplot.
The civil estate case and Matthew Hutchins’s later executive-producer role on the completed film are aftermath facts. They do not rewrite the physics of Oct 21. They do show how Hollywood sometimes metabolizes tragedy into continued production — a cultural fact, not a conspiracy proof.

Local homicide investigators seized guns, ammo, phones, and took statements.
Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office treated the ranch as a crime scene. Search warrants and evidence logs — as described in charging materials and press briefings — swept firearms, ammunition boxes, and electronic records. The early investigative question was blunt: how did a live round enter a supposedly controlled prop weapon?
That question split the public into camps before lab work finished. Negligence camp: broken safety culture. Sabotage camp: someone planted a round. Baldwin-defense camp: the gun malfunctioned or the state overcharged a star. This file lets each camp speak, then maps them to primaries.

Investigators found live ammunition mixed into the prop environment — the core documented negligence fact.
Film sets that use real firearms as props are supposed to keep live ammunition off the premises. Dummies should be inert; blanks should be blanks. Rust broke that wall. Reporting on warrants and later trial evidence established that live rounds were present among the production’s ammunition. That single workplace fact is why the industry-negligence path is rated Documented on this guide.
Who introduced the live rounds, and with what mental state, is a narrower question. Negligence can be reckless inventory. Sabotage requires intent. The public record convicts Gutierrez-Reed of involuntary manslaughter and records Halls’s plea; it does not, on this file, convict a named person of intentional murder-by-planted-round.

Reporting on the lab conclusions said the Rust revolver could not be made to fire in quarter-cock, half-cock, or full-cock positions without a trigger pull while its internal components were intact. The only testing path that produced a discharge without a trigger pull involved damage that broke the trigger sear/cylinder-stop arrangement.
That is the primary forensic spine for answering “did the gun just go off with no trigger pull?” while the gun was intact: the lab said no. Baldwin’s statement that he never pulled the trigger is therefore in direct tension with the intact-firearm testing. Defense experts fought about how much trigger travel counts and whether “pull” means a conscious deliberate squeeze. Those are real disputes — but they do not erase the FBI intact-gun finding. t306u: answer the trigger claim on the trigger evidence.

New Mexico OMI called the shooting an accident — manner language that coexists with criminal negligence cases.
The Office of the Medical Investigator’s accident manner is often misunderstood online. In death investigation, “accident” is a manner category. It is not a certificate that nobody committed a crime of negligence. Drunk-driving deaths can be accidents in manner and still support vehicular homicide. Rust’s OMI label sits beside, not instead of, the later Halls plea and HGR conviction.
People who cite OMI to claim “see, no crime” are answering the wrong question. People who ignore OMI to claim “certified homicide” are also overfiring. Read manner and charging as different instruments.

Intact-firearm FBI testing contradicts a no-trigger discharge; defense disputes meaning of “pull.”
Baldwin told the public versions of “the gun just went off” / he didn’t pull the trigger. FBI testing of the intact revolver found it would not fire without a trigger pull. That contrast is the cleanest single claim-fight on this file.
Steel-man the defense: maybe “pull” means a full conscious intentional squeeze, maybe hammer/thumb geometry, maybe later damage tests matter. Steel-man the state/forensic camp: the intact gun’s sear mechanics required trigger movement to drop the hammer on a live primer. This guide rates the narrow claim “the intact Rust revolver could fire with zero trigger actuation” as False as stated against the FBI reporting — while leaving room that lawyers will forever argue about what Baldwin subjectively felt in his hand.

No contest to negligent use of a deadly weapon; probationary sentence; cooperation.
Halls’s plea was the first criminal accountability moment the public could point to. A petty misdemeanor is not manslaughter. Critics called it a slap on the wrist; supporters of the deal called it a clean admission that the safety verbal failed. Both reactions can be true as politics; the legal fact is the plea and sentence as entered.
Cooperation terms mattered for later trials: Halls was positioned as a witness against others. That is ordinary plea practice, not proof that prosecutors invented the case.

October 2022 settlement with Baldwin and producers; terms sealed; judge approval mid-2023.
In October 2022, the Hutchins estate reached a settlement with Alec Baldwin and Rust producers. Public reporting said the wrongful-death case would be dismissed, Matthew Hutchins would take an executive-producer credit as production resumed, and financial terms would remain confidential. A New Mexico judge later approved the settlement structure, with reporting that the couple’s son’s share used annuity-style payments at adulthood milestones.
Sealed dollars mean this guide cannot pretend to know the number. What is documented is the existence of a court-supervised civil peace that let the film finish. Civil settlement is not a criminal confession and not a finding of intentional murder.

IATSE and industry safety culture shifted; NM workplace citations entered the aftermath record.
After Hutchins’s death, union meetings, safety bulletins, and producer-side protocol talk intensified. Some productions moved further toward inert replica firearms and CGI muzzle flashes; others doubled armor staffing. Those shifts are real industry history even when they are unevenly applied.
New Mexico workplace-safety citation reporting against the production sits in the aftermath spine as regulatory, not criminal, accountability.

March 2024: jury convicts on involuntary manslaughter.
The armorer’s trial was the fullest courtroom airing of set-safety failures. Prosecutors argued that Gutierrez-Reed’s inventory and check failures were criminal negligence under New Mexico involuntary-manslaughter law. The defense argued she was scapegoated for a broken production and for others’ mistakes. The jury convicted.
Conviction video and news-pool clips are wired on this file. Appeals later challenged fairness and evidence — standard post-conviction practice; a pending appeal is not an acquittal.

Maximum sentence; release on parole May 2025; conditions include stay-away; appeal pending.
Gutierrez-Reed received an 18-month prison sentence — reported as the maximum on the count of conviction. She was released on parole in May 2025 after serving a substantial portion, with electronic monitoring, curfew, employment/school expectations, mental-health conditions, firearms bans, and orders to stay away from the Hutchins family as reported.
As of this guide’s research date (Oct 2026), her New Mexico Court of Appeals challenge remained the live criminal residue on the armorer spine. Do not write “affirmed” unless a disposition order says so.

Involuntary manslaughter charging path with indictment turbulence before trial.
Baldwin’s criminal path was messy: charging decisions, special-prosecutor transitions, indictment revisions, and defense motions that sought dismissal before a jury verdict. Early online certainty that “Baldwin walks because famous” or “Baldwin is finished” both outran the docket.
What finally ended the criminal case was not a jury acquittal. On July 12, 2024, Judge Sommer dismissed the case with prejudice after finding the state had withheld material ammunition evidence. That is a discovery-sanctions ending — a judicial finding about prosecution conduct — not a forensic blessing of every Baldwin public statement.

Judge finds withheld ammo evidence; case dismissed with prejudice; courtroom video widely circulated.
The dismissal hearing became the most-watched Rust legal moment after the shooting itself. The court concluded that prosecutors and connected investigators had failed to disclose material evidence related to ammunition — the literal subject matter of a live-round case. Dismissal with prejudice means the state could not simply refile the same charge.
Baldwin wept in the courtroom; pool cameras captured it; YouTube mirrors spread within minutes. The legal holding is colder: the state’s evidence handling broke the prosecution. t306u: that Documented holding is not the same claim as “Baldwin was politically targeted by the White House.” Rate politics separately.

Prosecutors filed to appeal the dismissal, then — after New Mexico attorney-general posture shifted — withdrew the appeal on December 23, 2024. The NM Courts PDF notice is a primary. Documented industry-negligence critical path.
Path A says Hutchins died because a film workplace that handles real guns failed basic ammunition control and safety calls. Supporting record: live rounds on set; Halls plea; HGR involuntary-manslaughter conviction; OSHA-style aftermath; years of crew complaints about rushing. This path does not require a villain with a motive to kill. It requires a broken system.
Path A is the mainstream court path. Rival paths that deny live rounds existed are fighting trial evidence. Rival paths that accept live rounds but insist only intentional planting matters are changing the subject — the t306u error.

Forensic path: intact gun required trigger pull; Baldwin statements contested against that lab spine.
Path B is not “Baldwin is a murderer.” Path B is “the mechanical story Baldwin offered about a spontaneous discharge without trigger pull does not survive intact-firearm FBI testing.” Grand-jury and trial experts amplified that fight. The criminal case’s dismissal on discovery grounds means a jury never returned a Baldwin verdict on manslaughter — but dismissal is not a lab retraction.

Intentional-planting theories: motive stories without a conviction for murderous planting.
Path C claims someone deliberately introduced a live round to harm Baldwin, Hutchins, the production, or “Hollywood.” Online versions blame disgruntled crew, political enemies, or prop-supply malice. What Path C must show, and has not shown on this file’s primaries, is intent plus identity.

Closed enough to state: Hutchins died from a projectile fired from the revolver Baldwin held; live rounds did not belong on that set; Halls pleaded; HGR was convicted and sentenced; Baldwin’s manslaughter case ended via prejudice dismissal plus appeal withdrawal; FBI intact-gun testing required trigger pull.
Still open or sealed: HGR appeal outcome; exact civil dollars; a completed public proof of intentional sabotage by a named planter; any future civil residue. This file will need a memory update if the Court of Appeals flips HGR’s conviction.
