Chapter 1
Path tease: twenty hinges
This guide’s critical path has twenty links. They are not a mood board. They are the hinges a serious account needs: a New Mexico Western at Bonanza Creek Ranch; Hannah Gutierrez-Reed as armorer; Dave Halls as first assistant director and safety coordinator; a prop-and-ammo supply orbit that includes PDQ Props and Seth Kenney; the October 21, 2021 camera rehearsal in which Alec Baldwin held a revolver that discharged, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza; a Santa Fe County Sheriff’s investigation; live rounds documented where only dummies and blanks belonged; FBI Firearms/Toolmarks testing on trigger function; an Office of the Medical Investigator accident manner that does not erase later crimes of negligence; a sealed Hutchins-estate civil settlement; Halls’s March 31, 2023 no-contest plea; court approval of the civil deal; Gutierrez-Reed’s March 2024 involuntary-manslaughter conviction and eighteen-month sentence; Baldwin’s July 12, 2024 dismissal with prejudice for withheld ammunition evidence; the state’s December 23, 2024 withdrawal of its appeal; Gutierrez-Reed’s May 2025 parole with an appeal still pending; industry safety aftershocks; sabotage theories that never became a public murder-plant conviction; and the t306u split between Documented discovery misconduct and Claim-layer political-motive talk. [1][2][3][4][5]
Rival theories do not get equal fog. Each must say which links it accepts, which it reinterprets, which it removes, and which new links it needs. The negligence path is strongest from live rounds through the Halls plea and the armorer verdict. The trigger path is strongest in the FBI intact-gun reporting. The sabotage path is strongest as a question about provenance and weakest as a completed identification of an intentional planter. The prosecutorial-misconduct path is strongest on July 12, 2024 — and must not be smuggled into a harder claim that Santa Fe was a national political hit unless that harder claim earns its own primaries.
