The Inspector General Act lets a president fire inspectors general, but he must give Congress 30 days’ written notice and reasons. Trump fired about 17 in January 2025 without it. In September 2025 Judge Ana Reyes found the violation clear but refused to reinstate eight who sued, finding they had not shown the kind of harm that would justify it. [1][2]
On 1 August 2025 the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported only 73,000 jobs added in July and revised May and June down by a combined 258,000. Hours later Trump fired Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, saying the numbers were “rigged” to make him look bad. He offered no evidence, and former BLS chiefs from both parties said revisions are normal and that the commissioner does not shape the numbers. [3][4]
