Who is who

The relatives who turn up in the records.

Joe Biden served in the Senate from January 1973 to January 2009, as vice president from 2009 to 2017 and as president from 2021 to 2025. He has two sons from his first marriage, Beau (1969–2015) and Hunter (born 1970), and a daughter, Ashley (born 1981), with his second wife, Jill. [1][2][3][4]

Most of the business stories involve two people: Hunter, a lawyer and lobbyist turned consultant and board member, and Joe’s younger brother James (Jim), who worked in construction, health care and consulting and was Hunter’s partner in the China venture. Their records, bank accounts and testimony are the core of the 2023–2024 House impeachment inquiry. [5]

Others appear more briefly. Joe’s sister Valerie Biden Owens ran his early campaigns. James’s wife Sara, Valerie’s husband John Owens and Joe’s youngest brother Francis (Frank) were all named in the clemency warrant Biden signed on 19 January 2025, his last full day in office. [6]

What we can’t tell you. A family map is not evidence about anyone’s conduct; each case file names the person and the act.

The sources

  1. U.S. Senate — Senators who became president ↗

Read the linked record and its date. A biography, witness account, court ruling and partisan interpretation establish different things.

  2. National Archives — Biden vice-presidential records and biography ↗

Official archival biography and collection description; links to released records. It is not an independent judgment about family misconduct.

  3. Archived White House — Jill Biden biography ↗

Archived official biography, written before the administration ended. Present-tense references to teaching and office describe that period, not a verified October 2026 employment status.

  4. Biography — Ashley Biden profile ↗

Independent biographical profile, used for birth year and social-work background only.

  5. James Biden interview, February 21, 2024 ↗

Primary interview; pages 127–129 address loans and repayments. The introduction explicitly says the interview is not under oath, although knowingly false statements to Congress can still be criminal. Do not call this a perjury conviction.

  6. DOJ: original five-relative clemency warrant, dated January 19, 2025 ↗

Crucial date distinction: actual warrant says January 19, 2025; public announcement was January 20. Covers nonviolent federal offenses beginning January 1, 2014, through warrant date; five named adults only.

The crash, Beau, and the drunk-driver story

A real tragedy and one line in the retelling that was wrong.

On 18 December 1972, six weeks after Biden won his Senate seat, a tractor-trailer hit the station wagon carrying his wife Neilia and their three children. Neilia and 13-month-old Naomi died. Beau and Hunter, then three and two, were hospitalized; Biden was sworn in at their bedside. He has said the grief nearly led him to quit before he started. [1]

For years Biden said the truck driver had been drinking. PolitiFact found no evidence for that. The driver, Curtis Dunn, was never charged; police found Neilia had pulled out from a stop sign into his path. [2]

Beau became Delaware’s attorney general, served in Iraq with the Army National Guard in 2008–2009 and died of glioblastoma in May 2015. Biden has linked the cancer to burn pits in Iraq; the science on that link is not settled. [3][4]

What we can’t tell you. The crash account rests on contemporary reporting and the police finding, not a modern reconstruction.

The sources

  1. Archived White House — Joe Biden biography ↗

Official retrospective with an openly favorable perspective. It gives Ashley’s birth year as 1980; Jill’s official biography and the independent Ashley profile give 1981. This guide uses 1981 and does not adopt every claim in the retrospective.

  2. PolitiFact — The 1972 crash and unsupported drunk-driver claim (2020) ↗

Read the linked record and its date. A biography, witness account, court ruling and partisan interpretation establish different things.

  3. Delaware government — Beau Biden’s military service and public career (2015) ↗

Government commemorative announcement; reliable for the stated offices, service dates and death, but its praise is not an independent evaluation.

  4. FactCheck.org, December 2019: Biden exaggerates science on burn pits and brain cancer ↗

The evidence on burn pits and glioblastoma.
