The anonymous-buyer promise

What the gallerist told Congress.

In 2021 the White House presented an arrangement under which Georges Bergès’s gallery would keep buyers’ names from Hunter and the administration, so no one could buy a painting to buy influence. [1]

In January 2024 Bergès told Congress that Hunter knew some buyers, including Kevin Morris and the Democratic donor Elizabeth Hirsh Naftali. Questioners calculated that buyers known to Hunter accounted for about 70% of sales value. Bergès said he never spoke with the White House about the arrangement. Republicans said the firewall was a fiction; Democrats said there was no evidence of a favor for anyone. [2][3][4]

What we can’t tell you. The 70% figure is by value and was calculated by questioners.

Kevin Morris

The collector, lender and benefactor.

Kevin Morris, a Hollywood lawyer who met Hunter in 2019, testified that he bought 11 paintings for $875,000 and gave Hunter millions of dollars in financial help, including money for his tax debts, which he described as loans. He said he wanted nothing from the government. [1][2]

In a March 2025 court declaration reported by ABC News, Hunter said he had sold only one painting, for $36,000, since late 2023, after 27 earlier works sold for an average of nearly $55,000. [3]

What we can’t tell you. No complete ledger of Hunter’s debts to Morris has been made public.
