The debate and the family

Who wanted him to stay in.

Before the debate, the White House dismissed videos of Biden appearing to freeze or wander as “cheapfake” clips, and some had indeed been cropped to cut out context. The debate was live and unedited, and within days Democrats were calling for him to step aside. [5][1]

AP reported that in the days after the debate, family members, Jill and Hunter among them, were urging him to keep running, even as tensions grew inside a White House known for discipline. On 5 July Biden told ABC he was staying in. Sixteen days later he withdrew and endorsed Kamala Harris. [2][3][4]

What we can’t tell you. Accounts of private family conversations come from people familiar with them, not from the family.

“Is this a stroke?”

Jill Biden’s 2026 memoir.

In her June 2026 memoir, View From the East Wing, Jill Biden wrote that as she watched the debate she wondered: “Is this a stroke? I felt like we were watching an AI hologram of the man we knew, and the hologram was glitching. Has he been drugged?” [1]

She told NPR that doctors checked him in the car right after he left the stage “and said, ‘Oh, he’s fine.’” The White House had said at the time that he was examined in the days after the debate, not that night. [2]

What we can’t tell you. She does not say a stroke was found; she says doctors told her he was fine.
