Fox–Dominion settlement arc — labeled record card for the guide cover.

The AI Files · Fox News, Dominion, and Tucker Carlson’s Exit · 2020–2024

Settlement Without a Jury

On 18 April 2023, minutes before opening statements in Wilmington, Fox Corporation and Fox News agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787.5 million. Fox’s SEC filing acknowledged the court’s rulings that certain claims about Dominion were false. Six days later Fox announced it and Tucker Carlson had “agreed to part ways.”

The lawsuit was not a vague culture-war slogan. It was a defamation docket built on broadcasts after the 2020 election, thousands of protest letters, unsealed texts and emails, and a summary-judgment opinion that called falsity “CRYSTAL clear” while leaving actual malice for a jury — a jury that never sat. This guide tells that arc, names the critical path, and measures the other explanations against it.

Chapter 1

Arizona, then the revolt

On the night of November 3, 2020, Fox News’s Decision Desk called Arizona for Joe Biden before the other major networks. The call was right. The audience reaction, inside a network that had become a political home for millions of Trump voters, was fury. [1] [2]

Dominion Voting Systems would later tell a Delaware court that viewers began fleeing toward outlets that embraced a stolen-election storyline — and that Fox set out to lure them back. [2]

Chapter 2

Dominion becomes the villain

Across Fox opinion and Fox Business air, a then-little-known election vendor was cast as the villain of 2020: rigging software, flipped votes, Venezuelan lineage, kickbacks. Sidney Powell, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Lindell and others supplied the lines; hosts supplied the platforms. [2] What Fox aired

Those were not treated by the court, years later, as mere “someone said” vapor. They were Statements about Dominion — and Judge Eric M. Davis would call them false as a matter of law. [3]

Chapter 3

The country pushes back

While the claims aired, the official layer pushed the other way. CISA and election-infrastructure partners called 2020 the most secure U.S. election. Attorney General William Barr said DOJ had not found fraud that would change the outcome. Republican officials in Georgia and elsewhere certified results and rejected machine-theft lore. [4] [5] [2]

Dominion itself began a paper war: letters and emails, eventually thousands, documenting falsity and demanding that Fox stop. [6]

Chapter 4

Inside the building

Discovery later pulled the curtain. Primetime hosts texted anger at the news side over Arizona. Bill Sammon wrote that weak ratings make good journalists do bad things and that Fox faced an existential journalistic crisis. Tucker Carlson privately called Powell a liar and software-rigging claims absurd — while on-air segments still kept doors open. Rupert Murdoch emailed that Giuliani’s presser was “really crazy stuff” and “damaging.” [7] [8] [9] Carlson on Powell

That private/public gap became the actual-malice battlefield.

Chapter 5

Delaware

On March 26, 2021, Dominion sued Fox News Network in Delaware Superior Court for $1.6 billion. In November it sued Fox Corporation too. Motions to dismiss failed. The cases were consolidated. The texts came out. [2] [10] [6]

Chapter 6

“CRYSTAL clear”

On March 31, 2023, Judge Davis granted Dominion summary judgment on falsity. None of the Dominion-related Statements about the 2020 election were true — “CRYSTAL clear.” Fox’s own summary-judgment motions failed. Actual malice — knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard — remained for a jury. [3] [11] The SJ opinion

Chapter 7

$787.5 million

On April 18, as trial was to begin, Fox Corporation and Fox News settled for $787.5 million. The Form 8-K says so. Fox acknowledged the court’s rulings finding certain claims about Dominion false, and said it preferred peace to “the acrimony of a divisive trial.” Reporting said no on-air apology was required. [12] [13] [14] The settlement

A jury never answered malice.

Chapter 8

Six days later

April 21: Carlson’s last *Tucker Carlson Tonight*. April 24: Fox announces they have “agreed to part ways.” [15] [16]

Was the ouster a settlement condition? Anonymous reports and Carlson’s later book say yes. Fox and Dominion say, on the record, no. [17] [18] The condition fight

Other weather — workplace litigation, texts insulting executives — also sat in the room. [19]

Chapter 9

The unfinished twin

Smartmatic’s separate New York case was not bought off by Dominion’s check. Delaware Chancery said as much while sorting shareholder derivative leadership fights over who should chase Fox directors for the $787.5 million hole. [6]

Chapter 10

Two movies, one docket

One movie: a court found the Dominion claims false, discovery showed the gap between private knowledge and public air, and Fox paid historic money. [3] [12]

The other: a coerced peace that avoided a First Amendment trial and a Murdoch deposition, with no on-air confession and a martyred primetime host. [14] [18]

              How this guide works

              Sources and method

This guide leads with primary sources on the claim spine: Dominion’s Delaware complaints, Judge Eric M. Davis’s March 31, 2023 summary-judgment opinion, Fox Corporation’s April 18–19, 2023 Form 8-K, Fox News Media’s April 24 parting statement, and unsealed discovery exhibits quoted in court filings.

Mainstream secondary reporting is labeled as mainstream. Rival critical paths (clear liability; settlement-without-admission; ratings capture; Carlson as settlement condition; Sullivan reform; Dominion-did-it denialism) are stated at their strongest and measured against the path.

Grokipedia is used only as a private checklist. It is never cited.

Ukraine-war narrative is out of scope.
