The “mysterious deaths”

Odds of 100,000 trillion to one. Where the number came from, and the newspaper’s own admission.

CIA record dated July 19, 1967, RIF 104-10170-10145. It reproduces a magazine allegation about Gary Underhill; a claim stored in an intelligence file is not an agency finding that it is true.

RECORD / AT A GLANCE

Odds figure retracted by its own publisher; no pattern found

False that an actuary established odds of 100,000 trillion to one; the Sunday Times told the House committee the figure was “based on a careless journalistic mistake and should not have been published.” Documented that the House committee examined about 21 deaths and found no evidence any was caused by the assassination. Documented that Gary Underhill died of a gunshot in May 1964, ruled a suicide, and that a 1967 magazine report said he had blamed a CIA clique; unproven that his death was connected to Dallas.

OPEN THE RECORD

Sources & limits.

Numbered citations in each article identify the relevant sources. These records have different purposes and evidentiary weight.

  1. HSCA testimony of Jacqueline Hess on “mysterious deaths,” 25 September 1978 (AARC mirror) ↗

The committee’s look at the witness-death odds and the Sunday Times’s admission that its figure was wrong.

  2. CIA memorandum on Ramparts, Gary Underhill and Samuel Cummings, 19 July 1967, RIF 104-10170-10145 ↗

The memo that opens by quoting a magazine story about Underhill, not a CIA confession.

  3. National Archives 2022 release index page listing the same Underhill memo ↗

Shows the record was already public, with redactions, in 2022.
