RECORD / AT A GLANCE

Biographical record

The life story is well documented. Fraud in Chicago in 1960 was alleged and litigated; Republican challenges failed, and Kennedy would have won the electoral college without Illinois.

PARTLY TRUE Kennedy’s life & presidency

“Kennedy did not write Profiles in Courage.”

The Miller Center says Kennedy wrote it while recovering from back surgery, “benefiting also from the handiwork” of Senate staffer Theodore Sorensen. How much was Sorensen’s is argued.

Who says it: Critics, historians.

UNPROVEN Kennedy’s life & presidency

“Chicago stole the 1960 election for Kennedy.”

Illinois was close and Chicago’s count was suspicious, but recounts did not change it, and without Illinois Kennedy still had 276 electoral votes.

Who says it: Republicans in 1960, later writers.
