The New Mexico Survivors’ Truth Commission found that federal and state authorities in New Mexico deferred to prosecutors in Florida and New York for decades. The FBI interviewed the ranch manager on site in 2007 but did not search. A state inquiry was closed in 2019 at federal prosecutors’ request. The commission said several federal prosecutors’ offices refused or ignored its subpoenas. It also documented that Epstein bought the land from a former governor and that a lawyer who handled the purchase later became the state’s U.S. attorney; it did not find that either fact affected investigations.
