The video and the “missing minute”

What the Justice Department released in 2025, and why it made things worse

The minute

What is missing and what the government says.

The released file runs from the evening of 9 August into the morning of 10 August. At 11:58:59 pm the clock jumps to 12:00:00. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the system reset every night at midnight, so every night’s recording was missing a minute, and that nothing had been withheld. [1][2]

The explanation was plausible for an old DVR. It was also delivered by officials who had promised a “client list” and then said none existed, so many people did not accept it. [1][3]

What we can’t tell you. Nightly-reset logs for other dates have not been published to confirm the explanation.

Two pages: no incriminating “client list,” no credible evidence of blackmail, death ruled a suicide, jail video released. The agencies’ own conclusion, attacked from the left and the right.

The metadata

Edited is not the same as doctored, but it isn’t raw either.

WIRED examined the file’s metadata and found it had been processed with Adobe Premiere Pro, saved several times on 23 May 2025, and assembled from at least two source clips, with a few minutes apparently trimmed from one. That contradicts calling it “raw.” [1]

CBS had a forensic video analyst review it. He found signs it was a screen recording, stitched together and slightly sped up, so the 11 hours actually run a bit under that. A government source told CBS an uncut version with no missing minute exists and is held by the FBI, the Bureau of Prisons and the inspector general. That copy has not been released. [2]

What we can’t tell you. Metadata shows how a file was made, not what was in the original. The government source to CBS is anonymous.

WIRED’s analysis of file metadata: processed in Adobe Premiere, saved several times on 23 May 2025, assembled from at least two clips. Shows editing, not what was cut or why.

CBS’s analysis with forensic video expert Jim Stafford, and an anonymous government source’s claim that an uncut copy exists. The source has not been named and the uncut copy has not been released.

The orange shape on the stairs

What was seen at 10:39 pm.

The OIG reported that at about 10:39 pm an unidentified officer appeared to walk up the stairway to Epstein’s tier and came back down at 10:41 pm. That is the last time the OIG saw anyone enter the tier before 6:30 am. Viewers of the 2025 video saw an orange blur on the stairs at about that time and asked whether it was an inmate, not an officer. [1]

Tova Noel told House investigators in 2026 that she was not the figure. The OIG took it to be an officer; others think it could be an inmate in orange. No one has publicly identified it. [2][3]

What we can’t tell you. The camera was low quality and far from the stairs, as the OIG noted.
