“Epstein didn’t kill himself”

How a punchline became something left, right and centre half-believe

How it spread

From a joke format to the mainstream.

The phrase began as a punchline on meme apps, where posts would start on any topic and swerve into the same line. It jumped to television in November 2019 when a former Navy SEAL, Mike Ritland, closed a Fox News segment with it, and to Hollywood when Ricky Gervais told it at the Golden Globes. It was printed on merchandise and held up on signs at protests. [1][2][3][4]

It spread because it was a joke and a suspicion at once. You could say it without claiming to know anything, and nearly everyone in the room would nod.

What we can’t tell you. Memes show mood, not facts.

Why everyone believes it

The steelman is in the record.

Polls since 2019 show doubt in every party: in August 2025, 39% of Democrats, 44% of Republicans and 40% of independents said murder. The left tends to suspect powerful men he could have named; the right tends to suspect intelligence services or the Clintons; many religious readers see a spiritual darkness in the whole story. They share one reasonable starting point: the government lost him. [1][2]

The jail’s failures are documented: guards who falsified records, a cellmate removed and not replaced, cameras that did not record, a missing minute on the released video. Those facts justify suspicion. Whether they amount to murder is a different question, weighed in the murder theory, the death at MCC and the jail video.

What we can’t tell you. Popularity is not evidence either way.
