The father at Dalton

Donald Barr left Dalton three months before Epstein arrived. Who hired Epstein has never been settled.

The timing is close enough to fuel decades of theories. Donald Barr, the father of the future attorney general, announced his resignation as Dalton’s headmaster in February 1974 and left in June. Epstein began teaching there that September. Whether Barr hired him before leaving, or the math department or his successor did, has never been established; Snopes concluded the claim could not be pinned on him. [1][2]

Donald Barr also wrote a 1973 science-fiction novel, Space Relations, in which sexual slavery features. The book gets passed around online as a clue. A novel is not evidence of anything its author did, and no record links the book to Epstein. Former students remember Epstein as a charismatic young teacher who socialized with students, which troubles many readers today; the full story of his Dalton years is in the man and the money. [1][2]

In 2025 William Barr told the House committee he did not consider the Dalton connection pertinent. [3]

What we can’t tell you. No hiring record has been published; accounts from the period conflict.

The son at Justice

Barr oversaw the Justice Department, and the Bureau of Prisons, when Epstein was charged and when he died.

When Epstein was arrested in July 2019, critics asked whether Barr should step aside, because Kirkland & Ellis, the firm he had worked for, had represented Epstein in the 2000s. Barr consulted department ethics officials and stayed on the new New York case, but recused himself from any review of the 2008 non-prosecution agreement. [1]

A month later Epstein was dead in a federal jail run by an agency Barr supervised. Barr ordered investigations, said he had seen the footage and called the night “a perfect storm of screw-ups.” Guards were later charged with falsifying records; the inspector general found negligence and misconduct but no evidence of homicide. The disputes over the video are in the jail video and was it murder?. [2]

What we can’t tell you. Internal deliberations about the case are not public.

What Barr said under oath

In 2025 Barr testified he knew of no client list, saw nothing implicating Trump, and believed Epstein killed himself.

On 18 Aug 2025 Barr sat for a deposition with the House Oversight Committee. According to Chairman James Comer, Barr said he was not aware of any client list and had seen no evidence implicating Trump. [1]

The transcript, released in September, adds detail. Barr said he was convinced the death was suicide and that he had not been aware of the so-called missing minute in the released video. Asked about intelligence links, he offered what he called a supposition: that Epstein may have talked to a CIA unit that debriefs businessmen who travel abroad, as many executives do, but that he did not believe Epstein was an intelligence operation. [2][3]

The case for suspicion is simple: the man whose father’s school gave Epstein his start ran the department when its most important prisoner died, and his account matches the official one. The case against is also simple: Barr kept the 2019 prosecution going, the inspector general and the FBI reached the same conclusions independently, and no document ties him to any decision about Epstein’s cell. His testimony is his account, not proof. [2][3]

What we can’t tell you. A deposition is not cross-examination, and Barr was not asked under penalty about every theory.
