The 2019 arrest

A private jet from Paris, a safe full of photographs and a judge who said no to bail

The charges

What New York said he did.

The indictment accused Epstein of recruiting dozens of girls, some as young as 14, to his Manhattan townhouse and his Palm Beach mansion between 2002 and 2005, paying them hundreds of dollars in cash for “massages” that became sexual abuse, and paying some to bring in other girls. Prosecutors called it a vast network. [1]

The Florida non-prosecution agreement did not stop the case: SDNY took the position that it bound only the Southern District of Florida. U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman asked more victims to come forward and thanked journalists for their work. [1][2]

What we can’t tell you. An indictment is an accusation. Epstein pleaded not guilty and died before trial.

The townhouse and the safe

What agents found, by the prosecutors’ account.

Agents searched the Upper East Side townhouse the night of the arrest. In a bail memo, prosecutors said they found “hundreds – and perhaps thousands” of sexually suggestive photographs of nude or partly nude young women, and a locked safe holding compact discs with handwritten labels such as “Young [Name] + [Name],” “Misc nudes 1” and “Girl pics nude.” [1]

In a later letter, prosecutors said the safe also held more than $70,000 in cash, 48 loose diamonds and an expired 1980s Austrian passport bearing Epstein’s photograph but another name, listing Saudi Arabia as his residence. His lawyers said the passport was for protection when traveling as a wealthy Jewish man in the Middle East. Judge Richard Berman denied bail on 18 July. [2][3]

What we can’t tell you. These are prosecutors’ descriptions; the full contents of the discs have not been made public, and protecting victims is one reason.

The question that hung over everything

Who else was in those files?

From the moment of the arrest, the question was who else would be exposed. The photos, the discs and the cash fed a belief, on the left and the right, that the case would bring down powerful men. That belief survived his death and drives most of what follows in these files. [1]

In July 2025 the Justice Department said its review of the evidence found no basis to charge uncharged third parties. Many people do not accept that. The client list, blackmail and files release cases look at what is known. [2]

What we can’t tell you. Much of the 2019 evidence remains withheld to protect victims or under court seal.

The sources

Prosecutor’s press remarks, including the appeal for more victims to come forward.

  2. DOJ and FBI: Memorandum on the Epstein investigation, 7 Jul 2025 ↗

Two pages: no incriminating “client list,” no credible evidence of blackmail, death ruled a suicide, jail video released. The agencies’ own conclusion, attacked from the left and the right.
