Juanita Broaddrick publicly alleged in a February 1999 Dateline interview that Clinton raped her in 1978, while he was Arkansas attorney general. She had previously denied unwelcome advances in a sworn statement connected to the Jones lawsuit. She told interviewer Lisa Myers that she had denied the incident to avoid being forced to recount it. Clinton’s lawyer denied the allegation.[1]
The interview included people who said she had told them about an assault years earlier. Such accounts can corroborate that a disclosure occurred; they are not eyewitness testimony to the alleged attack. The long delay, the inconsistent sworn positions and the limits of reconstructing events decades later all formed part of the reporting difficulties. Contemporary coverage also documents NBC’s extended process before airing the interview.[1][2]
Broaddrick later interpreted an encounter with Hillary Clinton as an effort to silence her. That interpretation is a separate allegation. PolitiFact found no independent confirmation of the claimed threatening exchange. Lack of confirmation does not prove that Broaddrick invented an assault, just as her account does not establish Hillary’s knowledge or a coordinated intimidation scheme.[3]
