The laptop was not an invented object. In Hunter Biden's June 2024 gun trial, FBI agent Erika Jensen identified the device and explained that its serial number matched Apple records. Prosecutors used messages and other digital material as evidence. A January 2024 prosecution filing had already described obtaining the laptop and independently securing Apple backups. Those are substantial grounds for rejecting a blanket claim that all the underlying material was fabricated. [1][2]
Its political route was separate from that evidentiary route: repair-shop owner John Paul Mac Isaac supplied a copy to Rudy Giuliani's lawyer; Giuliani provided material to the New York Post. Hunter's lawyer disputed the legality of obtaining and distributing the data. CBS later found no tampering in one reviewed copy. [3][4]
A physical device, a forensic image, an email extracted from it, a screenshot and a later online compilation are different evidence objects. Authenticating one does not authenticate them all. Nor does proving that a message was sent prove every boast or proposed deal inside it actually happened. The useful question is specific: which file, checked against what independent record, supports which alleged act? That standard allows serious reporting on genuine business correspondence while resisting both wholesale dismissal and wholesale certification. [1][2]
