Who belongs in which file?

The family relationships behind the headlines.

Joe Biden’s public career ran from Delaware politics to the Senate, the vice presidency and the presidency. He served in the Senate from 1973 to 2009 and as president from 2021 to 2025. His immediate family includes his wife Jill, sons Beau and Hunter from his first marriage, and daughter Ashley from his marriage to Jill. Beau died in 2015. [1][2][3]

The business controversies chiefly involve Hunter and Joe’s brother James. Joe’s other siblings, Valerie and Francis, and some spouses also appear in the clemency record. Those are different roles: being related to the president, doing business, testifying to Congress and receiving a pardon are not interchangeable facts. The relevant chapter identifies the person and conduct each time.

Ashley’s public biography concerns social work and advocacy; Jill’s includes education and the first lady’s role. Neither should be silently folded into an allegation about a corporate payment to Hunter. Even an accurate family tree can become misleading when its arrows imply a financial relationship that the source documents do not show. [3][4]

Source limits. This is a guide to the adults who appear in the public record, not an exhaustive family tree or a profile of private relatives.

Joe Biden’s career—and the real plagiarism controversy

Public service does not erase documented misstatements.

Biden’s long tenure included chairing Senate committees, serving as vice president under Barack Obama and becoming the 46th president. The National Archives and Senate supply the institutional chronology. An official biography also describes his legislative work; its favorable assessment should not be mistaken for an independent review of every policy or decision. [1][2][3]

His first presidential campaign ended in September 1987 amid a genuine plagiarism controversy. At an Iowa appearance he used material from British politician Neil Kinnock without credit. He had credited Kinnock elsewhere, but that did not cure the uncredited performance. Scrutiny also returned to a law-school paper and exaggerated descriptions of his academic record. [4][5]

The academic fact check documents that he overstated his class standing and other credentials. These are legitimate issues of accuracy and judgment. They do not establish an unrelated bribery allegation decades later, just as a later lack of criminal charges would not make the old misstatements disappear. Each question requires its own evidence. 3. Archived White House — Joe Biden biography ↗

Official retrospective with an openly favorable perspective. It gives Ashley’s birth year as 1980; Jill’s official biography and the independent Ashley profile give 1981. This guide uses 1981 and does not adopt every claim in the retrospective.

Retrospective account, used alongside the academic-record fact check. It dates withdrawal to September 24; other chronologies date the announcement September 23. This guide uses September 1987 without implying the discrepancy changes the underlying events.

The family losses—and the drunk-driver claim

A genuine tragedy acquired a factual claim the evidence did not support.

In December 1972, shortly after Biden’s Senate election, his wife Neilia and their daughter Naomi died in a road collision. Beau and Hunter survived. Biden later married Jill in 1977; their daughter Ashley was born in 1981. The losses are central to the family’s own account of its life. [1][2]

One part of the public retelling needs correction. Biden at times described the truck driver as having been drinking. Reporting reviewed by PolitiFact found no evidence of alcohol involvement and no charges against driver Curtis Dunn. The correction should not become a different unsupported accusation against Neilia: contemporary accounts say she pulled away from a stop sign into the truck’s path, not that investigators established she deliberately ran one. [3]

Beau later served as Delaware attorney general and as an Army National Guard officer deployed to Iraq. He died from brain cancer in 2015. His military service, illness and death are distinct facts. None supplies a shortcut for deciding the business or criminal cases involving other members of the family. [4]

Source limits. The crash discussion relies on reporting about the original investigation, not a new reconstruction. The guide does not diagnose causes of Beau’s illness.
