The Grievance Studies Affair

In 2017–18 three scholars spent a year writing absurd or morally grotesque papers in the dialect of identity-focused “theory.” Seven were accepted. Four went online. Then a dog-park paper blew their cover.

Helen Pluckrose, James Lindsay, and Peter Boghossian called the target fields “grievance studies.” Editors and critics called the project a bad-faith sting. Portland State treated journal editors as human subjects. This guide leads with the Areo reveal, the papers, and the institutional record — then measures the other stories against one critical path. Sibling to the 1996 Sokal Affair under The Academia Files, not under The Media Files.

The story

From Conceptual Penis to Areo

The precursor hoax, the twenty-paper year, Dog Park excellence, the WSJ scoop, Areo’s dump of methods and reviews, retractions, PSU’s IRB, Cynical Theories, and Boghossian’s exit. Underlined links open full entries.

Chapter 1

A failed one-shot

The Conceptual Penis paper (May 2017) taught Lindsay and Boghossian what not to do. Publish a cartoon thesis in a weak venue and critics will talk about article-processing charges, not about the target field. Areo later treats that episode as prologue: the larger project would need better journals and a harder test. [1][2]

Chapter 2

Rules of the audit

They wrote three rules into the design: aim at ranked peer-reviewed titles; never pay to publish; if an editor or reviewer asks whether the paper is a hoax, admit it. Journalists were outside that confession rule — a detail that mattered when identity checks began. [2]

Chapter 3

Learning the dialect

Pluckrose joined in September 2017. Together the three treated the work as reflexive ethnography: cite the real literature, absorb reviewer comments, and bend scholarship until an absurd or unethical conclusion sounded like a contribution. They called the target cluster “grievance studies.” Critics would call the same method a sting. [2][3]

Labeled record card: Twenty papers

Chapter 4

Twenty papers

Final drafts totaled nearly 180,000 words. Some papers invented dog-park fieldwork; some reworked political texts; some offered poetic autoethnography. The authors insist the citations were real even when the theses were forged — the same citation strategy Sokal used in 1996. [2][4]

Chapter 5

Dog Park

Human Reactions to Rape Culture and Queer Performativity in Urban Dog Parks became the affair’s emblem. *Gender, Place & Culture* accepted it, then — per Areo — invited it into a 25th-anniversary “leading pieces” series. Reviewer praise quoted by the authors is almost liturgical. [2][5]

Chapter 6

Fat, toys, Hooters

Other acceptances stacked up: fat bodybuilding in *Fat Studies*, the Back Door paper in *Sexuality & Culture*, the breastaurant ethnography in *Sex Roles*. Each, on the authors’ telling, tested whether moral fashion could outrun method. [2]

Chapter 7

Meta-hoax and Mein Kampf

Hoax on Hoaxes 2 argued, inside *Hypatia*, that hoaxing social-justice scholarship was unethical privilege defense — a paper designed to be cited against them. Our Struggle is My Struggle took a different dare: Areo says Affilia accepted a solidarity-feminism essay built from rewritten *Mein Kampf* material. [2][6]

Chapter 8

The unfinished stack

Not everything “won.” Six papers were retired. Others, including Progressive Stack and Feminist Astronomy, sat in revise-and-resubmit limbo when time ran out. The unfinished stack is why raw “seven” is both hard fact and incomplete numerator. [2]

Chapter 9

Identity collapse

In late July 2018, Real Peer Review and then reporters hunted “Helen Wilson” and the Portland Ungendering Research Initiative. They found neither. *Gender, Place & Culture* moved toward an expression of concern. The authors say the ethics of continuing deception collapsed once journals and major newsrooms demanded proof of identity. [2][5]

Chapter 10

Wall Street Journal

They came clean to Jillian Kay Melchior in August; her Wall Street Journal story landed 2 October 2018. A day later Areo published the long essay. The covert phase was over; papers still under review would never finish their counterfactual lives. [7][2]

Chapter 11

Areo’s dump

Academic Grievance Studies and the Corruption of Scholarship is the primary spine: methods, scoreboard, reviewer excerpts, and a political plea not to torch universities wholesale. Read it as interested testimony plus an unmatched document dump — not as a registered trial. [2]

Chapter 13

Journals clean up

Expressions of concern, retractions, and withdrawals followed. One rival path says this proves the system works; another says celebrating Dog Park before the catch is the point. Falsified data explains some accepts; it does not explain a poetry-therapy acceptance with no dataset. [9][5][2]

Chapter 15

Editors as subjects

In December 2018 the IRB found human-subjects research without prior approval: the “subjects” were editors and reviewers. Chronicle reporting describes no ordinary plagiarism/fabrication finding beside that process violation. Authors called it a category error that forbids secret quality audits. [12][11][10]

Chapter 16

Rorschach week becomes years

Musa al-Gharbi wrote that few minds changed: the affair was a Rorschach. Alison Phipps argued it revealed the hoaxers’ politics. Areo’s own text tried to police right-wing overread in advance. [3][13][2]

Chapter 17

Cynical Theories

In 2020 Pluckrose and Lindsay published Cynical Theories, moving from sting results to a history of Applied Postmodernism. The book is primary for their later claims; it does not add new 2018 acceptances. [14]

Chapter 18

Resignation

On 8 September 2021 Boghossian’s resignation letter to Provost Susan Jeffords narrated Title IX coaching, bathroom vandalism, disrupted events, IRB punishment, and a campus he called a Social Justice factory. OPB printed PSU’s insistence that it remained a home for free speech. [15][16]

Press said Sokal Squared. Inspiration is real; identity is not. One paper versus twenty; *Social Text* versus a dozen identity titles; Lingua Franca versus WSJ/Areo; no IRB sequel in 1996. Use the live Sokal guide beside this one. [4][2]

How to read the rest

The explorer below keeps the scoreboard, the people, and seven rival theories on one critical path. Start with Areo and the journal notices; treat later slogans as slogans. Memory fractured in October 2018 and never fully converged — which is why this page refuses a single cartoon verdict. [2][3]

How this guide works

Sources and method

This guide leads with primary sources on the claim spine: the October 2018 Areo essay (methods, paper list, reviewer comments), the Wall Street Journal scoop that forced the premature reveal, accepted-paper records and journal expressions of concern/retractions, Portland State IRB/Committee of Inquiry reporting, Boghossian’s resignation letter, and the authors’ own books (especially Cynical Theories) as primary for their claims.

Mainstream secondary reporting (Chronicle, Inside Higher Ed, Retraction Watch, Heterodox Academy, Times Higher Education) is labeled as mainstream. Rival critical paths are stated at their strongest and measured against the path.

The Museum of Hoaxes / Wikipedia pages are topic pointers only — never the verdict spine. This guide does not use AI encyclopedia mirrors as sources.

The 1996 Sokal Affair is cross-linked as a live Academia full guide at /files/academia-sokal/; this page does not rebuild it.
