A jogger is raped and beaten nearly to death in Central Park; others are assaulted the same night.

On the night of 19 April 1989, investment banker Trisha Meili was raped and beaten in Central Park and left for dead. Other joggers, including men later named in court papers, were assaulted in the park that night. [1][2]

The crime became a national symbol of New York’s late-1980s fear of street violence. Tabloids used the word ‘wilding.’ [3]

Bottom line Documented

The attack is not disputed. Who committed the rape was — until DNA and a confession answered it.

What the record can’t settle

This guide does not recreate every assault path that night as a separate forensic case file.

Five Black and Latino teens, 14–16, are swept up within days.

Police arrested Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, and Korey Wise. They were fourteen to sixteen. [1]

Media coverage fused the park assaults into a single moral panic about packs of teenagers. [2]

Bottom line Documented

The arrests are historical fact. Whether the investigation was reliable is the later fight.

What the record can’t settle

Arrest ≠ guilt; the vacatur later erased the convictions.

Trisha Meili survived. She was not killed. Trump’s later ‘killed a person’ line is false.

Meili survived catastrophic injuries. She later went public and published a memoir. [4][1]

Any claim that the Central Park Five ‘killed’ the jogger is false. [5][6]

Bottom line Documented

Black/Latino defendants, white victim, tabloid heat — the case polarized New York.

About $85,000 for full pages demanding the death penalty — without naming the five.

On 1 May 1989 Donald Trump paid for the same full-page advertisement in the New York Times, Daily News, New York Post, and Newsday. Contemporaneous reporting put the cost near $85,000. [2][3]

The headline: ‘BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY. BRING BACK OUR POLICE!’ The text answers Mayor Koch on hate, says muggers and murderers should suffer, and that when they kill they should be executed. It does not print the teenagers’ names. [1]

New York had no practical death-penalty path for executing those teens for this case; the ads were political theater as much as policy. [4]

Bottom line Documented

The ads are documented primary text. Whether they ‘called for the five to be executed by name’ is the partly-true fight.

What the record can’t settle

Intent inside Trump’s head is not a document; the published words are.

Trump’s ad answers Koch; his 2024 line name-checks Bloomberg.

The 1989 ad explicitly answers Mayor Koch. [1][2]

In 2024 Trump said Bloomberg agreed with him on the Central Park Five; the suit notes Koch was the 1989 mayor. [3][4]

Bottom line Partly true

Partly true only if someone conflates later Bloomberg comments with 1989 mayoral authority — the ad’s addressee was Koch.

What the record can’t settle

Bloomberg’s later opinions, if any, are not the 1989 ad.

Death penalty demanded in the wake of their arrests; names omitted.

Critics say Trump called for the five to be executed. The ads urge bringing back the death penalty for muggers and murderers and were bought while the teens were the public suspects. [1][2]

The ads do not print their names. That gap is why careful ratings say partly true. [1]

Bottom line Partly true

Context ties the ads to the case; the text stops short of naming them.

Four give videotaped statements later called coerced; Salaam never confesses on video.

After hours of interrogation, four of the five gave videotaped statements that the prosecution used at trial. They quickly recanted and have long said the process was coercive. [1][2]

Yusef Salaam did not give a videotaped confession; police notes from his interrogation were used instead. [1]

Trial courts admitted the statements. The 2002 vacatur and DNA finding later destroyed their reliability as proof of the rape. [3]

Some detectives and Linda Fairstein still argue the five joined other park crimes even if Reyes alone raped Meili.

A lasting minority view holds that even after Reyes, the five participated in robberies or assaults on other victims that night. [1][2]

The DA’s office nonetheless consented to vacating those related convictions as well, not only the rape counts. [3][4]

New York City pays $41 million in 2014 to end the civil-rights case.

In June 2014 a deal near $40 million was announced; on 5 September 2014 Magistrate Judge Ronald Ellis approved a $41 million settlement. [3][2]

CNN reported Wise received $12.25 million and each of the other four $7.125 million — roughly a million dollars per year incarcerated. [1]

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration publicly backed resolving the case. [4]

‘They pled guilty’ and ‘killed a person’ — both false.

At the ABC debate in Philadelphia, after Kamala Harris raised the 1989 ads, Trump said the five ‘admitted — they said, they pled guilty’ and that they ‘badly hurt a person, killed a person ultimately.’ [1][2]

They pleaded not guilty. The jogger survived. Fact-checkers and the later complaint treat both clauses as false. [3][5]

Court papers, DA affirmation, ad text, settlement wires, debate/suit reporting — never Grokipedia.

Method rules: every factual line cites a source; Ukraine war out of scope; polls only if pollster-named; thin nest becomes gateway. [1][2]

The older short case remains as a MAINTAINED RECORD gateway after ship.

Bottom line Documented

Process transparency is part of the product.

What the record can’t settle

AI drafting can err; sources are the check.

Sources

Beetlestone dismisses intentional infliction without prejudice.

The order dismisses IIED and implication-based defamation without prejudice, preserving leave to amend. [1][2]

Bottom line Documented

Narrowing ≠ win for Trump on the core insult claims.

What the record can’t settle

Amended pleadings after Apr 2025 may exist; check docket for updates.
