Chapter 1
Nebraska, a tractor, an oath
Timothy James Walz was born in West Point, Nebraska, on 6 April 1964. The birthplace is not a controversy. The oath is the beginning of one: two days after his seventeenth birthday he enlisted in the Army National Guard beside a recruiter who, in the story he likes to tell, had to climb off a tractor. That 1981 enlistment opened a roughly twenty-four-year enlisted career that would later be mined for every missing signature and every careful rank word. [1] [2]
