What the leaked IRS data showed.
ProPublica reported in June 2021, from IRS data it obtained, that Thiel used “stock deals unavailable to most people” to turn a Roth IRA worth less than $2,000 in 1999 into $5 billion by the end of 2019. If he waits to withdraw until April 2027, he will owe no tax on it. Thiel did not comment. [1]
Roth accounts were meant for ordinary savers; the rules then did not stop founders putting cheap startup shares inside them. The Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on such accounts. [2]
What we can’t tell you. The tax returns are not public. Thiel has not confirmed the figures.

Did he leave to avoid a billionaire tax?
In December 2025 Thiel Capital opened an office in Miami, as a proposed one-time California tax on billionaires was being debated. BBC Mundo says he moved his own residence to Miami at the end of 2025, “fleeing” the proposed tax. [1][4]
In February 2026 Palantir, where he is chairman, moved its headquarters from Denver to Miami. [2][3]
The timing fits, and the BBC states it as the reason. He has not said so himself in anything we found.

A foreclosure auction and a secret buyer.
The Los Angeles Times reported on 30 September 2026 that Thiel bought Casa Encantada in Bel-Air for $130 million at a July foreclosure auction, through a company. The Guardian, following the Wall Street Journal, said he does not plan to live there. The Times lists homes in Hawaii, New Zealand, Miami, Washington and Buenos Aires. [1][2]
