The institute’s 2008 launch notice says Thiel “pledged $500,000.” Its FAQ says Patri Friedman founded it, Thiel was an early supporter, and the Thiel Foundation last donated in 2014. [1][2]

WIRED reported that Próspera, a charter zone on the Honduran island of Roatán, was financed through Pronomos Capital, a fund “backed by prominent billionaires, including Peter Thiel and Marc Andreessen.” After Honduras repealed the law that created such zones, Próspera’s backers sued for up to $10.775 billion at the World Bank’s arbitration center, where the case is listed.
