The Verge reported in February 2018 that Palantir software had supported a New Orleans police program that traced people’s ties to gang members, analyzed social media and predicted the likelihood that individuals would commit violence or become victims. Because it was set up as a philanthropic relationship through the mayor’s NOLA For Life program, it never went through public procurement, and some city council members did not know about it. [1]
Weeks later the outgoing mayor’s office said it would not renew the pro bono contract, which had been extended three times since 2012. Defense lawyers began asking whether the program had been disclosed in prosecutions. [2]
