Building 7

The 47-story tower no plane hit, and the long fight over why it fell

NIST diagram of a typical WTC 7 floor, with numbered columns. The agency identifies Column 79 in its probable collapse sequence. This is an engineering diagram, not a photograph.

RECORD / AT A GLANCE

Disputed

NIST’s explanation, thermal expansion of floor beams knocking a girder off Column 79, is the official finding and has wide professional acceptance. The University of Alaska Fairbanks study disputes it, but it was funded by Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth, and it offers no evidence of explosives. Neither has physical steel from WTC 7 to test.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THIS FILE

The claims, rated.

DOCUMENTED The towers, WTC 7 & demolition

“NIST refused to release some of its WTC 7 model files.”

It withheld connection models as a security risk, and a court upheld that in 2011. The Alaska team published all its files.

Who says it: A&E for 9/11 Truth.

PARTLY TRUE The towers, WTC 7 & demolition

“No plane hit WTC 7, yet it collapsed.”

True that no plane hit it. Debris from the North Tower started fires that burned uncontrolled for hours because the water mains were broken.

Who says it: Demolition proponents.

DISPUTED The towers, WTC 7 & demolition

“Fire brought down WTC 7.”

NIST found thermal expansion pushed a girder off Column 79, the first known tall building brought down mainly by fire. A study funded by A&E for 9/11 Truth disputes it.

Who says it: NIST; the University of Alaska Fairbanks study.

DISPUTED The towers, WTC 7 & demolition

“Barry Jennings heard explosions inside Building 7 before the North Tower fell.”

He and Michael Hess were trapped by a loud blast; NIST and Hess himself put it at the North Tower’s collapse, which severed seven of WTC 7’s columns.

Who says it: Jennings; Loose Change.

UNPROVEN The towers, WTC 7 & demolition

“The University of Alaska study proved WTC 7 was demolished.”

It concluded fire did not cause the collapse but did not identify what did and found no physical evidence of explosives.

Who says it: A&E for 9/11 Truth.
