The three stages

What NIST measured.

In its August 2008 draft NIST said the north face took 5.4 seconds to fall 18 stories, 40 percent longer than free fall would take. Asked in the public comment period to explain the difference in detail, NIST tracked a point on the roofline frame by frame. [1]

Its final report divides the descent into three stages: a slow start of about 1.75 seconds as the exterior columns buckled; a second stage of about 2.25 seconds, from 1.75 to 4.0 seconds, when the face fell at gravitational acceleration, about eight stories; and a third stage of slowing. NIST says the free fall was consistent with its model because the interior structure had already collapsed and the buckled exterior columns provided almost no support. [1][2]

What we can’t tell you. NIST’s FAQ does not name the commenters who prompted the change.

What the free fall proves

Each side’s reading.

For demolition proponents the free fall is the strongest evidence they have: they say a building collapsing on its own must use energy breaking things as it falls, so a period with no resistance means all support was removed at once. [2]

NIST’s answer is that its model already had the interior gone before the exterior moved. The free-fall stage was the outer shell, with nothing left inside to resist it, dropping after its columns buckled. [1] Which reading you accept depends on whether you think NIST’s model of the interior is right.

What we can’t tell you. The free-fall figure is measured from one camera angle on one point of the roofline.
