Why the Twin Towers fell

What NIST found, what it did not model, and the arguments that remain

Rescuers search the South Tower rubble after the attacks. The archive posted this historical image later; its displayed 2007 date is not the date of the attack.

RECORD / AT A GLANCE

Documented

NIST found the planes severed columns and stripped fireproofing, and the fires that followed weakened the floors until they sagged and pulled the outer columns inward, starting the collapse. It found no evidence of explosives. Its critics’ strongest point is that NIST modeled the collapse only up to the point it began, not the fall itself.

DOCUMENTED The towers, WTC 7 & demolition

“The Twin Towers fell because of plane damage and fire.”

NIST found the impacts severed columns and stripped fireproofing, and fires weakened floors until they pulled the outer columns in.

Who says it: NIST; most structural engineers.

DOCUMENTED The towers, WTC 7 & demolition

“NIST never modeled the full collapse.”

Its simulations stop when the collapse begins; it argues the rest was inevitable once the top section moved.

Who says it: Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth.

PARTLY TRUE The towers, WTC 7 & demolition

“The towers fell because the floors pancaked.”

Floors did fall, but NIST’s finding is that sagging floors pulled the columns in first; “pancaking” is not NIST’s cause.

Who says it: Early media explanations.
