FULL GUIDES INSIDE THIS HUB

Deep dives.
Full AI Files topics.

Each full guide is a complete AI Files topic — story-first, with pictures, a critical path and theories rated against it. Later Musk case guides will land here as short gateways convert; for now the life-and-power guide carries the Pretoria→DOGE spine. Related deep work on the Twitter Files lives as its own topic and is linked from that guide where relevant.

CONTEXT BEFORE CONTROVERSY

Biography.

Pretoria, Canada and Penn, Zip2 and PayPal, SpaceX and Tesla, Twitter/X, politics and DOGE. The background supplies context for the files; it does not decide them. Links open the full guide or nest on each question.

Elon Reeve Musk

Elon Musk is an engineer-executive whose companies span online payments, orbital launch, electric cars, satellite internet, brain–computer interfaces, a social network and a temporary U.S. government efficiency role. The collection below separates documented offices, filings and contracts from contested theories about origin wealth, immigration status, product claims and foreign influence.

  1. Pretoria and leaving South Africa
  2. Canada, Penn, Zip2
  3. X.com and PayPal
  4. SpaceX and Tesla
  5. Twitter becomes X
  6. Politics and DOGE

Pretoria and leaving South Africa

Elon Reeve Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on 28 June 1971, to Maye Musk (née Haldeman) and Errol Musk. He grew up under apartheid-era South Africa, attended local schools including Pretoria Boys High, and left the country as a teenager — a move he and family members have described as aimed at avoiding conscription and reaching North America.[1][2]

Stories that an emerald mine funded his later empire are a popular origin myth. Contemporaneous family and deal reporting does not establish emerald capital as the financing spine of Zip2, PayPal, Tesla or SpaceX; the full guide maps that theory against the documented early-company capitalization.[3] See the life-and-power guide.

Canada, Penn, Zip2

Musk spent time in Canada (Queen’s University, Kingston) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned degrees in economics and physics. After a brief Stanford PhD enrollment in 1995 he left to build Zip2, a city-guide software company, with his brother Kimbal. Compaq acquired Zip2 in 1999 — the cash-out that funded the next venture.[4][5]

Visa and work-authorization questions from this period are argued in a dedicated short case and inside the deep guide. Biography here records the educational path and Zip2 exit as documented; it does not treat contested illegal-work claims as settled fact.

X.com and PayPal

In 1999 Musk founded X.com, an online financial-services firm. In March 2000 X.com merged with Confinity (the company behind PayPal). Board and founder conflicts followed; Musk was replaced as CEO. When eBay acquired PayPal in October 2002, Musk was a major shareholder and walked away with capital that seeded SpaceX and later Tesla investments.[6][7]

“Founder of PayPal” is partly true as branding and partly incomplete as corporate history: PayPal’s product identity came from Confinity’s team (including Peter Thiel and Max Levchin) as much as from X.com. The guide keeps that distinction.

SpaceX and Tesla

Musk incorporated Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) in 2002. After early Falcon 1 failures, the company reached orbit, won NASA Commercial Resupply and later crew contracts, and pioneered routine first-stage landings. Gwynne Shotwell has long run day-to-day operations as president and COO.[8]

Tesla Motors (now Tesla, Inc.) was incorporated by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2003; Musk led the Series A in 2004, became chairman, and took the CEO role in 2008 during near-bankruptcy. A 2009 settlement with Eberhard produced the familiar “five co-founders” formulation used in Tesla’s own materials. The company went public in 2010, repaid a Department of Energy loan early in 2013, fought the SEC over the 2018 “funding secured” tweet, and saw Musk’s 2018 pay package voided then later re-approved in contested Delaware litigation.[9][10]

Autopilot / Full Self-Driving marketing, workplace race cases, SolarCity’s 2016 acquisition and Starlink’s Ukraine wartime role are separate claim spines inside the deep guide and pending short cases — not collapsed into “CEO of Tesla” biography.

Twitter becomes X

In 2022 Musk agreed to buy Twitter for about $44 billion, tried to terminate, was sued to close, and completed the acquisition in October 2022. He became owner and later rebranded the product as X. Mass layoffs, changes to verification and moderation, advertiser pullbacks, and lawsuits (including against Media Matters) followed. Linda Yaccarino was named CEO in 2023 while Musk remained the controlling owner and public face.[11]

The separate Twitter Files topic covers pre-acquisition moderation and government-adjacent content issues; this collection links it where relevant rather than duplicating that spine.

Politics and DOGE

Musk’s public politics shifted over the 2010s–2020s from mostly tech-libertarian commentary toward open support for Donald Trump in 2024, including large independent expenditures reported in FEC filings. After the 2024 election he took a high-profile role associated with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative alongside Vivek Ramaswamy’s early branding, with contested claims about savings totals and data access.[12]

A public feud with Trump in 2025 and later partial reunion are documented in contemporaneous statements and posts; motive narratives are not. Family life (multiple partners and children, including with Justine Musk, Talulah Riley, Grimes and Shivon Zilis) is biography context, not a conspiracy spine. OpenAI (which Musk co-founded and later sued) and xAI (including Grok and Memphis turbine disputes) sit in the AI chapter of the deep guide.[13]

BIOGRAPHY SOURCES

  1. Civil birth/identity record as reflected in contemporaneous profiles; Musk family interviews on Pretoria childhood (primary-adjacent personal testimony — label as such).
  2. School and emigration chronology in major authorized/unauthorized biographies and Musk’s own public accounts; conscription-avoidance framing is his/family claim.
  3. Errol Musk emerald-mine interviews vs. early Zip2/PayPal capitalization reporting — mapped as contested origin myth in the deep guide.
  4. University of Pennsylvania degree records as publicly reported; Stanford enrollment/withdrawal contemporaneous accounts (1995).
  5. Compaq/Zip2 acquisition coverage (1999).
  6. X.com–Confinity merger reporting (2000); PayPal board/CEO transition contemporaneous press.
  7. eBay–PayPal acquisition filings and closing coverage (Oct 2002).
  8. SpaceX corporate history; NASA CRS/Commercial Crew contract awards; landing demonstration records.
  9. Tesla incorporation and financing history; 2009 founder settlement; 2010 S-1 / IPO; DOE loan repayment announcements (2013).
  10. SEC v. Musk (2018) settlement on “funding secured”; Delaware Court of Chancery pay-package litigation (Tornetta) and later stockholder votes.
  11. Twitter merger agreement, Delaware specific-performance litigation, closing disclosures (Oct 2022); X Corp leadership announcements (Yaccarino, 2023).
  12. FEC independent-expenditure filings for 2024; White House / DOGE public announcements and Musk’s own posts on the role.
  13. OpenAI founding statements and Musk v. OpenAI litigation docket; xAI launch materials; contemporaneous Memphis environmental reporting on turbines.

Epistemology: SEC filings, NASA contracts, court dockets and FEC reports lead. Family interviews and Musk posts are labeled as interested testimony. Contested theories are not smuggled into this biography as settled fact — they are argued in the full guide against a critical path.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH A PAPER TRAIL

Social network analysis.

Named people and organizations with documented ties to Elon Musk’s public record. Edges below are drawn from incorporations, financings, appointments, contracts, court dockets and filings — not from invented adjacency. Contested influence claims are labeled as contested.

Mother · public figure

Maye Musk

Documented Mother; dietitian and model; frequent public interviews about Elon’s childhood and family.

Sources Family interviews; her published memoir materials.

Father · contested origin claims

Errol Musk

Documented Father; engineer/property figure in South Africa; source of emerald-mine anecdotes in interviews.

Contested That emerald wealth financed Zip2/PayPal/Tesla/SpaceX as a primary capital spine. Interview claims ≠ capitalization proof.

Brother · Zip2 co-founder

Kimbal Musk

Documented Co-founded Zip2 with Elon; later Tesla board member and restaurants/education ventures.

Sources Zip2 acquisition coverage; Tesla board disclosures.

PayPal Mafia · investor

Peter Thiel

Documented Confinity/PayPal leader; later investor/board adjacency in Musk’s network era; separate AI Files Thiel collection covers his own spine.

Sources PayPal merger/board history; later investment disclosures where filed.

PayPal Mafia · CTO lineage

Max Levchin

Documented Confinity co-founder / PayPal CTO-era figure in the merger that produced PayPal’s product identity.

Tesla incorporator

Martin Eberhard · Marc Tarpenning

Documented Incorporated Tesla Motors (2003); Musk led Series A (2004) and later became CEO (2008). 2009 settlement produced Tesla’s “five co-founders” language.

Sources Incorporation records; settlement coverage; Tesla S-1 narrative.

Tesla technical co-founder

JB Straubel

Documented Longtime Tesla CTO / co-founder in the five-founder settlement set; later Redwood Materials.

SpaceX operations

Gwynne Shotwell

Documented SpaceX president and COO; principal public operator alongside Musk’s chief-engineer/CEO role.

Sources SpaceX leadership bios; congressional and NASA hearing appearances.

Launch customer / regulator adjacency

NASA · FAA · NHTSA · SEC

Documented NASA CRS/crew contracts for SpaceX; FAA launch licensing; NHTSA Autopilot investigations; SEC settlement on the 2018 tweet. These are institutional edges, not personal friendships.

OpenAI co-founder · later adversary

Sam Altman · Greg Brockman

Documented OpenAI co-founders with Musk; later Musk lawsuit and public feud over nonprofit-to-capped-profit transition and competition with xAI.

Sources OpenAI founding announcements; Musk v. OpenAI docket.

Twitter era

Jack Dorsey · Linda Yaccarino

Documented Dorsey: Twitter co-founder/CEO across periods intersecting Musk’s pre-deal relationship. Yaccarino: X CEO from 2023 under Musk’s ownership.

Politics · appointing adjacency

Donald J. Trump

Documented 2024 campaign support and large IE spending; post-election DOGE-associated role; 2025 public feud and later thaw documented in posts and pool reports.

Contested That any single government contract or enforcement outcome was a direct personal payoff for political spending — requires a specific claim spine, not seating-chart inference.

DOGE branding partner

Vivek Ramaswamy

Documented Early public co-branding of DOGE with Musk; later path diverged as the initiative’s structure evolved in public statements.

Partner · children

Grimes · Shivon Zilis · Justine Musk · Talulah Riley

Documented Partners/spouses across different periods; multiple children with public birth/custody reporting. Family edges are biography, not proof of corporate or political claims.

Adjacency — emails / social graph

Jeffrey Epstein (intersection)

Documented (limited) Released email sets and flight/address-book controversies include Musk-related mentions that the deep guide and a short case examine. No Epstein criminal conviction of Musk; treat each document on its own spine.

Sources Court-released email productions; contemporaneous reporting — labeled carefully in the guide.

Public finance spine

DOE loan · NASA cargo · EV credits

Documented Tesla’s DOE ATVM loan (drawn and repaid early); SpaceX NASA payments; EV regulatory-credit revenue. “Built only on taxpayers” is a stronger claim than “received and fulfilled government contracts.”

X revenue conflict

Major advertisers · Media Matters litigation

Documented Large brand advertisers reduced or paused spend on X after content/moderation controversies; Musk/X sued Media Matters over advertiser-related reporting. Court filings are the spine for that dispute.

Method: every edge above is either a dated incorporation, financing, appointment, contract, court docket, FEC filing, or a labeled contested theory. No guilt-by-seating-chart edges. For the full narrative spine see the deep guide.

HOW THIS COLLECTION WORKS

Follow the evidence.
Keep the distinctions.

Biography and social-network analysis live on this hub so case guides can stay on their own spines. Contested origin, immigration-work, FSD-fraud, Kremlin-asset and DOGE-hoax theories are argued inside the deep guide against a critical path — not settled in the hero. Short case pages remain until converted; do not invent nest.json pointing at missing full guides.
