Pizzagate, Seth Rich and Guantanamo

The online stories that never had evidence behind them

Pizzagate

A theory built from food words in hacked emails.

In late October 2016 anonymous posts claimed that Anthony Weiner’s devices exposed a Clinton-linked child-abuse ring. When WikiLeaks published John Podesta’s hacked emails, users saw sinister meaning in any mention of pizza (they read “cheese pizza” as code for “child porn”) and fixed on Comet Ping Pong, a Washington pizza restaurant. [1][2]

On 4 December 2016 Edgar Maddison Welch, 28, walked into Comet Ping Pong with a rifle, pointed it at a worker and fired it inside the restaurant. No one was hurt. He found no captive children; the restaurant does not even have a basement. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years in prison. [1][2][3][4]

In her 2026 House deposition on Epstein, Rep. Lauren Boebert asked Hillary Clinton whether the new Epstein files related to the Pizzagate claims. She answered: “Pizzagate was totally made up.” [5]

The sources

  1. Amanda Robb / Type Investigations: Anatomy of a Fake News Scandal (2017) ↗

Reported reconstruction of traceable online posts and amplification; not proof of a single mastermind.

  2. PolitiFact: How Pizzagate went from fake news to a real problem (2016) ↗

Contemporaneous reconstruction of the false trafficking narrative, email reinterpretations and restaurant harassment. Used for historical development, not to imply child exploitation never occurs.

  3. U.S. Attorney, DC: Welch guilty plea and admitted attack, March 24, 2017 ↗

Primary prosecutor account of Welch’s guilty plea and the evidence underlying it. Distinguish the violent attacker’s convictions from the imagined crimes he came to investigate.

  4. Washingtonian: Welch sentenced to four years, June 22, 2017 ↗

Local contemporary sentencing report. Four-year sentence is a distinct later outcome from the March guilty plea.

  5. ABC News: Hillary Clinton deposition questions and answers, March 2, 2026 ↗

Reports the public deposition, including Hillary Clinton’s denials and the Pizzagate exchange. Her accusations of a partisan cover-up are her argument, not this guide’s finding.

Seth Rich

An unsolved murder, a retracted story, and a known hacking operation.

DNC staffer Seth Rich was shot dead in Washington in July 2016. Police have offered a reward; the case is unsolved. Online stories said he leaked DNC emails to WikiLeaks and was killed for it. [1]

The Mueller report found Russian military intelligence hacked the emails, and that statements by Assange and WikiLeaks about Rich “implied falsely that he had been the source.” Twelve GRU officers were indicted in 2018. [2][3]

Fox News published a Rich story in May 2017 and retracted it seven days later. His parents sued; Fox settled in 2020. [4]

What we can’t tell you. Without an arrest the motive cannot be proved either way.

The sources

  1. DC Metropolitan Police: Seth Rich homicide public bulletin ↗

Police bulletin identifies a real homicide and requests information. Its existence does not establish a political motive or make an unknown killer’s identity knowable.

  2. Mueller report, Volume I, discussion of WikiLeaks and Seth Rich, pp. 48–49 ↗

Investigative report, not a criminal verdict against every person discussed. Volume I pp. 48–49 describes how Assange invoked Rich while discussing publication of stolen material.

  3. DOJ: Indictment of twelve Russian intelligence officers for election hacking (2018) ↗

Charging announcement. Indictment is an allegation rather than a jury conviction. Relevant to evidence of the email-hacking operation, not direct proof of Rich’s killer.

  4. NPR / WXXI: Fox settles with Seth Rich’s parents (2020) ↗

Reports retraction and private settlement, with statements from both sides. A settlement ends litigation; it is not itself a trial verdict determining the murder.

Secret trials at Guantanamo

Stories of Clinton and Podesta executed by tribunal are invented.

Stories that Hillary Clinton or John Podesta were tried, convicted or executed by U.S. military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay circulate every year. Reuters traced them to Real Raw News, which describes its content as humour, parody and satire. The Pentagon said the claims were false. [1]

The sources

  1. Reuters Fact Check: Clinton and Podesta were not tried by the U.S. military at Guantanamo, 6 Dec 2023 ↗

Traces the “military tribunal” stories to a satire-and-hoax site network.
