Low rate one year, record bill another.
ProPublica, using leaked IRS data, reported in June 2021 that Musk paid $455 million in federal income tax from 2014 to 2018 while his wealth rose by $13.9 billion, a “true tax rate” of 3.27 percent by its measure, and $0 in 2018. Unrealized stock gains are not taxed as income. [1]
In December 2021, after selling Tesla shares and exercising options, Musk said he would pay more than $11 billion in tax that year. [2]

How Forbes got there.
Forbes said on 12 June 2026 that Musk had become the world’s first trillionaire after SpaceX’s listing. His fortune fell back below $1 trillion and Forbes said he passed it again on 5 October 2026. [1][2][3]
