RECORD / AT A GLANCE

Documented: co-founder by settlement, not the original incorporator

“Musk didn’t found Tesla” and “Musk founded Tesla” are both half-truths. He did not start it, but he funded it early, shaped the product, ran it from 2008, and holds the co-founder title under a legal settlement.

DOCUMENTED Tesla

PARTLY TRUE Tesla

“Musk didn’t found Tesla; he bought the title.”

He was not there at incorporation in 2003. He led the first big funding round in 2004, became CEO in 2008, and a 2009 settlement lets him use the co-founder title.

Who says it: Critics, Eberhard.

PARTLY TRUE Tesla

“Tesla was built on taxpayer money.”

A federal loan, EV tax credits, state incentives and regulatory-credit sales all helped. The loan was repaid early, and most revenue comes from selling cars.

Who says it: Critics.
