RECORD / AT A GLANCE

Upbringing documented / “emerald money built his empire” unproven

He had the advantages of a white child under apartheid, and his father has described a share in a Zambian emerald deal. There is no record tracing mine money into his companies, and his own early businesses and stock sales account for the money he later invested.
