Dead people on Social Security

Database records versus payments.

In February 2025, Musk posted that Social Security records listed millions of people over 100, some over 150, implying they were being paid. [1]

The records were old entries without death dates, not people receiving checks. Social Security’s acting chief said so publicly. Improper payments to dead people do happen, but on a far smaller scale. [1][2][3]

What we can’t tell you. None.

“Condoms for Gaza”

A claim Musk admitted might be wrong.

In the Oval Office on 11 February 2025, Musk repeated a White House claim that $50 million had gone to condoms for Gaza. BBC Verify found no evidence of that spending. Musk told reporters “some of the things that I say will be incorrect.” [1]

What we can’t tell you. A program for HIV prevention in Gaza province, Mozambique, was suggested as a source of confusion.

Deaths from the USAID cuts

What the estimates measure.

Musk led the dismantling of USAID in early 2025. A peer-reviewed study in The Lancet projected more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030, including 4.5 million children under five, if the cuts continued. Boston University runs a model-based counter of estimated deaths. [1][2]

These are projections and estimates, not counted deaths. They rest on the past effect of programs that were cut. [1][2]

What we can’t tell you. The final scale of program restoration and replacement is unclear.
