The Media Matters suit

What was alleged and where it stands.

Media Matters, a liberal media watchdog, reported in November 2023 that ads for brands such as Apple and IBM appeared next to pro-Nazi content on X. Several big advertisers paused spending. [2]

X sued in federal court in Texas, arguing Media Matters manufactured the placements by following extremist accounts and refreshing feeds. [3] A motion to dismiss was denied in August 2024. As of the latest docket check, there had been no trial. [1]

The advertiser boycott suit

Antitrust claims against the advertising industry.

X sued the World Federation of Advertisers and several brands, saying they conspired to withhold ad spending. Ad revenue had fallen by about half by mid-2023, by Musk’s account. [1][3]

In July 2024 a report by the House Judiciary Committee’s Republican majority said documents showed the WFA’s brand-safety group, GARM, had directed members to boycott Twitter after Musk bought it. GARM’s leader denied that in an interview with the committee. [4]

On 26 March 2026, a federal judge dismissed the suit, finding X had not shown an antitrust injury. In July 2026, X and the WFA reported a settlement. Its terms were not fully public. [1][2]

What we can’t tell you. Settlement terms are not fully known.
