Ewen Cameron pursued psychic driving and depatterning: attempts to break down established patterns and influence patients through repeated recorded messages and intensive psychiatric interventions. The methods included prolonged drug-induced sleep and unusually intensive electroconvulsive treatment. The Canadian government’s 1986 Cooper review examined the research, funding arrangements and treatment of patients. CIA support reached part of Cameron’s work through an intermediary. That funding connection matters, but it does not mean every treatment at the institute was conceived, directed or monitored personally by an intelligence officer. Nor does uncertainty about a researcher’s awareness of the ultimate funding source settle the separate question of what a patient understood and agreed to undergo. People could enter a hospital expecting treatment while being subjected to procedures they did not meaningfully authorize. [1]
The later Canadian assistance plan expressly concerned former Cameron patients who underwent depatterning. Its existence reflects a documented response to harm, not proof that the entire affected population was identified or repaired. The core issue is the difference between seeking medical care and consenting to dangerous experimental interventions. An institutional reputation, a physician’s therapeutic theory or covert funding cannot supply the patient’s missing permission.
