English Wikipedia’s written constitution: NPOV, verifiability, reliable sources, BLP.

From the early years, English Wikipedia’s claim to legitimacy rested on NPOV, verifiability, no original research, and a strict BLP rule. [1] [2] [4]

The five pillars framed the project as an encyclopedia, not a soapbox. [5]

Those rules defined the battlefield: sources, weight, and conduct.

Bottom line Documented

The policy stack is primary. Whether it still produces neutrality is the later fight.

What the record can’t settle

Policies are norms enforced by people.

The gender gap was already a known institutional problem

Record · Documented

Gender Gap Wikipedia edit-a-thon.
Gender Gap Wikipedia edit-a-thon. Liridon · CC BY-SA 4.0

Before 2016, research and WMF programs treated the editor gender gap as real.

Surveys found women were a small minority of active editors. [1] [2]

WMF ran outreach aimed at closing the gap — demographic skew was not invented after 2016.

Capture critics sometimes skip this; defenders sometimes treat gap programs as proof of capture. Both overreach.

Bottom line Documented

Demographic skew is documented early; it is not by itself proof of regime capture.

What the record can’t settle

Political skew is harder to measure than gender.

Surveys suggest left skew in some samples; methods vary.

Gender gap is robust; political affiliation surveys are fewer and contested. [1]

A left-leaning editor base can produce slant without Foundation orders.

In 2014 Gamergate pages became a multi-month war of SPAs, admins, and off-wiki campaigns.

The article was created in September 2014 and quickly drew throwaway accounts and veteran edit warriors. [1]

ANI, mediation, and community general sanctions failed to stabilize the topic. [1] [2]

Harassment and doxxing claims ran in both directions; ArbCom stressed BLP and battlefield conduct.

Bottom line History

Battlefield conditions are documented. Who “started it” remains camp-coded.

What the record can’t settle

ArbCom judged conduct, not the social truth of GamerGate.

Open structural question at the heart of capture claims.

Consensus policy assumes good-faith convergence. [1]

Ownership and tag-teaming are recognized failure modes. [2]

Whether AE + RSP + majority stamina systematically freeze out non-left views remains unsettled by a shared audit.

Bottom line Debated

Genuine question; triumphal answers outrun the data.

Recognized anti-pattern — central to GG complaints.

Policy rejects ownership of articles. [1]

GG evidence pages are full of ownership/tag-team allegations both ways. [2]

Stable majorities can look like ownership without a formal cabal.

Bottom line History

Ownership is a named failure mode in policy.

What the record can’t settle

Allegation volume ≠ proof in each instance.

AE is where topic bans and page restrictions actually land.

Uninvolved admins apply sanctions at WP:AE under DS/CT authorizations. [1] [2]

AE risk shapes what editors dare argue on talk pages.

Safety path: stops harassment. Chill path: selects for majority stamina.

Bottom line History

AE’s existence and logs are primary. Net valence is debated.

What the record can’t settle

Logs miss off-wiki intimidation.

Strict living-person rules remove garbage — and can entrench a winner’s narrative.

BLP demands high-quality sources and conservative tone for living people. [1]

That protects subjects from rumor — a genuine good.

In culture-war biographies, the same rule can freeze a hostile mainstream frame.

Bottom line Mixed

Dual use is a fair description in polarized times.

Each camp cites pages it thinks prove bias; systematic audits remain contested.

Downstream reuse

Wikimedia dumps are public raw material

Database dumps make Wikipedia text a default corpus for tech systems.

Wikimedia publishes regular dumps. [1]

Search and knowledge products reuse Wikipedia-derived structure. [2]

Local consensus can propagate far beyond the talk page that produced it.

Bottom line Documented

Reuse infrastructure is documented; it amplifies whatever Wikipedia is.

What the record can’t settle

Not every AI answer is a WP paraphrase.

Sources

  1. Wikimedia Downloads (database dumps) Primary technical fact: WP content is bulk-exported and widely reused by search and AI systems.
  2. Google Knowledge Graph / knowledge panels sourcing practices (secondary) Illustrates downstream reuse of structured knowledge; WP is a major input among others.

Documented incidents show Wikipedia minting or locking claims that media cite back.

Wikipedia maintains a list of citogenesis incidents. [1]

Encyclopedia errors are not locally contained.

Both capture and self-correction paths need this mechanism — it raises stakes.

Bottom line History

Citogenesis is documented. Frequency estimates vary.

What the record can’t settle

Many loops are trivia; political loops exist too.

Newsrooms routinely consult Wikipedia; knowledge panels sit beside headlines. [1] [2]

Practice predates 2016; polarization raised the cost of a slanted first draft.

Cascade claim needs reuse plus local bias — not conspiracy.

Bottom line Mixed

Reuse habit is widely observed; quantifying slant transfer is harder.

What the record can’t settle

Good reporters verify; many deadlines do not.

Sanger’s writings argue NPOV failed under progressive editor majorities. [1]

Strongest form: consensus + RS circularity with prestige media produce structural slant without WMF puppetry.

Weakest form: every disputed BLP as conspiracy proof.

Bottom line Debated
