Chapter 2

Memphis sanitation strike

King is in Memphis because of the 1968 sanitation workers’ strike — labor, dignity, and local Black workers’ organizing after the deaths of Echol Cole and Robert Walker and the city’s refusal to treat the workforce as more than disposable. AFSCME and local strike records are the why-trip primary. Without the strike, the Lorraine Motel balcony is a random stage. With the strike, the assassination sits inside a concrete labor fight about wages, safety, recognition, and the slogan that later froze into memorial language: I Am A Man.

The sanitation workers’ slogan and placards are primary visual language for why the trip mattered. Memorials later freeze that language into museum walls; start with the strike photographs and the workers who carried the signs. I Am A Man is not a soft caption under a balcony photo. It is a labor claim about recognition: that the men who hauled Memphis trash were entitled to contracts, safety, and dignity the city had denied.

Linking labor to civil rights was contested even inside movement coalitions. On April 3, 1968, King spoke at Mason Temple, the Church of God in Christ headquarters in Memphis. The address commonly called I’ve Been to the Mountaintop belongs on the audiovisual spine — tone, mortality language, and the sanitation strike’s moral frame — as a primary recording, not as a paraphrase. Start with contemporaneous photographs, news film, police and investigative descriptions of sightlines, and the rooming-house claims that became the forensic fight.

Rooming-house sightlines and bathroom-window theories are part of that fight; state them as claims with sources, not as settled physics. HSCA and earlier investigators argued over whether the shot came from the boarding house bathroom window across Mulberry Street and how the bundle of evidence abandoned near the scene fits Ray. Timeline discipline matters: shot, ambulance, hospital, death pronounced, then urban uprisings and mourning in multiple cities. Consequence layers are not proof of a single hidden author.

Ralph Abernathy, Andrew Young, Jesse Jackson, and other associates’ eyewitness adjacency belongs in people cards with careful labels — present nearby versus claiming to have seen the muzzle flash. News crews’ film is primary for what the public saw that night; it is not a ballistics report. Prefer dated broadcasts and stills over later commemorative montages that splice Mountaintop endings onto April 4 footage without labels.

National upheaval after the announcement is historical fact and moral consequence. It is not, by itself, evidence that a federal office ordered the shot. Keep the clock: Memphis local killing first; national reaction second. Guides that open with riot footage before the balcony erase the forensic spine.

Chapter 7

Ray fugitive path

James Earl Ray’s identification, escape from Memphis, international flight, London arrest, extradition, guilty plea, and later recantations are the criminal-case spine. Fingerprints and other investigative links led authorities to Ray; he fled through Canada and Europe under aliases; on June 8, 1968, he was arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport attempting to travel on a false Canadian passport; extradition returned him to the United States; on March 10, 1969, he pleaded guilty and received a ninety-nine-year sentence; he soon sought to withdraw the plea and spent decades claiming he was a patsy guided by a figure he called Raoul.

Rifle purchase and abandoned-evidence stories must be cited to investigative records, not to memory of a documentary. The bundle near the scene, the weapon attributed in the official case, and the fingerprint narrative are load-bearing objects on the mainstream path. FBI adjacency

FBI surveillance, wiretaps, and COINTELPRO-era hostility toward King are documented in Church Committee and related records. That history creates a permanent adjacency problem: an agency that harassed King also investigated his murder. Adjacency is real. Authorship is a separate claim. Show the file that proves harassment; separately show the file that would prove operational control of the shooter. Missing the second file is not proof of the second claim, and noting the first file is not a smear.

HSCA established (1976) and reported (1978–1979) sit on the timeline after Ray’s plea and after Church Committee revelations about intelligence abuses. That sequence matters: Congress reopened the case in a climate that already distrusted closed official stories. Still, ‘reopened’ is not ‘solved forever.’ Later civil litigation and family advocacy used and disputed pieces of the same record.

What any rival theory must account for after HSCA includes the dual finding itself. A pure lone-gunman path must explain why HSCA said conspiracy was likely. Coretta Scott King and the King children publicly doubted the lone-gunman closure for years. The late-1990s civil case narrative peak — often associated with advocacy involving William Pepper — is a real track on the memory and claims shelves. Label it carefully: a civil proceeding’s findings are not automatically a criminal retrial of Ray, and they do not erase the 1969 plea docket by magic.
