Did ABSCAM target Democrats?

Six of seven convicted members were Democrats. Here is what that number does and does not mean.

RECORD / AT A GLANCE

UNPROVEN AS DELIBERATE; DOCUMENTED AS LOPSIDED

Six of seven convicted members were Democrats in a Congress that was about 63 percent Democratic. The middlemen were Democratic machine figures, the agents asked on tape for Republicans, and the Justice Department was run by a Democratic administration. No evidence shows Democrats were chosen because they were Democrats.
